Some experts told state-backed Financial News this would be a move aimed at stabilising the exchange rate and economic expectations.

Sources familiar with the matter said the move of the central bank was actually a response to a surge in bond purchases as it was concerned that market stability could be at risk. By selling treasury bonds, the PBOC aims to cool off the current rally of bonds and ensure the yield curve is balanced. Such an approach makes clear how the central bank stays committed to ensuring financial stability and managing economic expectations.

He then took inspiration from the elderly local people who hailed from his hometown in Henan province in central China. He had seen these people walk around advertising signs.&nbsp;

China views the 89-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader, who is based in India, as a "separatist" who is working to split Tibet from the rest of the country.

The Act does not change longstanding bipartisan US policy to recognise the Tibet Autonomous Region and other Tibetan areas of China as part of the People's Republic of China (PRC), a policy decision that Biden said falls within his authority to recognise foreign states and the territorial bounds of such states.

The Act enhances US support for Tibet, empowering State Department officials to actively and directly counter disinformation about Tibet from the Chinese government.

It rejects false claims that Tibet has been part of China since “ancient times,” pushing for negotiations without preconditions between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama or his representatives or the democratically elected leaders of the Tibetan community and affirming the State Department’s responsibility to coordinate with other governments in multilateral efforts toward the goal of a negotiated agreement on Tibet.

In June, China had opposed the bill.

“Anyone or any force who attempts to destabilise Xizang to contain or suppress China will not succeed,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

“The US should not sign the bill. China will take resolute measures to defend its sovereignty, security and development interests,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Department imposed visa restrictions on several Chinese officials for their involvement in the repression of marginalised religious and ethnic communities.

“The PRC has not lived up to its commitments to respect and protect human rights, as demonstrated by the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, the erosion of fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong, persistent human rights abuses in Tibet, and transnational repression around the world,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Friday.

“We call on the PRC to abide by the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to accept the many recommendations made this year during the Universal Periodic Review of its human rights record, including unconditionally releasing PRC nationals it has arbitrarily and unjustly detained,” he said.

But others are changing with the times -- such as a facility in Shanxi province, which has traded chortling children for a more mature cohort.

"(The problem) became particularly evident as the number of children continued to decrease," principal Li Xiuling, 56, told AFP.

"After my kindergarten emptied out, I thought about how to make the best use of it," she said.

Li's preschool was founded in 2005 and once served as many as 280 children, but closed last year.

It reopened in December as Impressions of Youth, a recreational centre for people of retirement age and above.

The space in the provincial capital Taiyuan boasts around 100 adult learners of music, dance, modelling and other subjects.

"It's quite a progressive idea," Li said. "They come to fulfil some of the dreams they had when they were young."

On a rainy morning this month, a modelling instructor led a line of immaculately coiffed older women as they sashayed around the classroom in traditional cheongsam dresses and pink oil-paper parasols.

In another class, students sat in a semicircle beating African drums in time to soaring socialist songs.

He Ying, 63, said joining the centre had helped her overcome a post-retirement lack of confidence and meet new friends.

"I used to feel that my cultural life...was very impoverished, that there wasn't much meaning in going on living," she told AFP.

"(People here) are not just waiting to grow old."

Nearly 15,000 kindergartens closed in China last year as enrollments plunged by 5.3 million compared to 2022, according to government data.

In dusty, industrial Shanxi –- where the overall population is falling –- there were 78,000 more deaths than births last year.

The centre bears traces of its past, with bunkbeds and dinky writing desks lining the colourfully decorated walls of former classrooms.

For Yan Xi, who used to teach at the kindergarten but now leads classes for retirees, the shift has taken some getting used to.

"Little kids just believe whatever you say, but the elderly... have their own ways," she said.

"I have to think harder about how to communicate with them," Yan told AFP.

Several other facilities across China have found success by pivoting from preschool to senior education, according to local news reports.

Weighing approximately 2560 kilogrammes and stored in 103 drums, each containing 25 kg, the shipment was an onboard vessel Hyundai Shanghai that sailed under the Cypriot flag, on April 18, from Shanghai Port, China. On its journey to Karachi, the vessel made a stop at Kattupalli Port in Tamil Nadu on May 8 where Indian customs authorities during a routine check detained the consignment.

The chemical, which is on India's export control list 'SCOMET' (Special Chemicals, Organisms, Materials, Equipment and Technologies (SCOMET)) as a controlled substance led to further investigation. Once confirmed that the shipment contained Ortho-Chloro Benzylidene Malononitrile, a substance listed under the Wassenaar Arrangement as well, an international arms control regime to which India is a signatory, it was seized.&nbsp;

India seizes banned chemicals bound for Pakistan from China

Chinese Navy ships were spotted inside the US economic zone by a cutter on a routine patrol late last week, the US Coast Guard said on Wednesday (Jul&nbsp;10).

The crew saw three Chinese vessels approximately 124 miles (200 kilometres) north of the Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Later, a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak spotted a fourth ship.

The Chinese ships were in international waters but within the US Exclusive Economic Zone.

“The Chinese naval presence operated in accordance with international rules and norms," said Rear Adm. Megan Dean, commander of the Seventeenth Coast Guard District.

"We ensured that there were no disruptions to US interests in the maritime environment around Alaska," added the admiral.

The Chinese ships informed the Coast Guard their mission was freedom of navigation operations.

The Kimball observed the ships until they moved south into the North Pacific Ocean. The Coast Guard reported that its cutters spotted Chinese military ships in the Bering Sea in both 2021 and 2022.

Notably, the sighting of the ships occurred just a week after the Chinese Navy began its annual joint patrol with the Russian Navy in the Pacific Ocean, the US Naval Institute reported on July 5.

According to a retired senior Coast Guard officer, Aaron Davenport said that&nbsp;when Chinese vessels claim&nbsp;that they’re conducting ‘freedom of navigation operations,’ it’s basically China flexing its muscles.

He further stated that this situation is somewhat similar to how the US has deployed the Coast Guard and other ships to the Taiwan Strait to support freedom of navigation and bolster American allies in the region.

However, he emphasised the key difference that the Aleutian Islands are unequivocally part of the US. The Taiwan Strait, on the other hand, separates the island democracy of Taiwan from China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory.

It is worth mentioning that the US military regularly conducts what it calls freedom of navigation operations in disputed waters in Asia that China claims as its own.&nbsp;

As per the US, 'Freedom of navigation' in the waters is in America’s national interest.

Chinese Navy ships were spotted inside the US economic zone by a cutter on a routine patrol late last week, the US Coast Guard said on Wednesday (Jul 10). The crew saw three Chinese vessels approximately 124 miles (200 kilometres) north of the Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands, the Coast Guard said in a statement. Later, a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak spotted a fourth ship. Megan Dean, commander of the Seventeenth Coast Guard District. "We ensured that there were no disruptions to US interests in the maritime environment around Alaska," added the admiral. The Chinese ships informed the Coast Guard their mission was freedom of navigation operations. The Coast Guard reported that its cutters spotted Chinese military ships in the Bering Sea in both 2021 and 2022. Notably, the sighting of the ships occurred just a week after the Chinese Navy began its annual joint patrol with the Russian Navy in the Pacific Ocean, the US Naval Institute reported on July 5. According to a retired senior Coast Guard officer, Aaron Davenport said that when Chinese vessels claim that they’re conducting ‘freedom of navigation operations,’ it’s basically China flexing its muscles. He further stated that this situation is somewhat similar to how the US has deployed the Coast Guard and other ships to the Taiwan Strait to support freedom of navigation and bolster American allies in the region. However, he emphasised the key difference that the Aleutian Islands are unequivocally part of the US. The Taiwan Strait, on the other hand, separates the island democracy of Taiwan from China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory. It is worth mentioning that the US military regularly conducts what it calls freedom of navigation operations in disputed waters in Asia that China claims as its own.
