The state government in southern Karnataka, that agreed on Tuesday to comply with top court&#39;s decision of releasing &nbsp;12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, earlier warned of dealing with an &#39;iron hand&#39; in case any incidents of violence came to the fore.&nbsp; 
 
Meanwhile, chief minister Siddaramaiah is holding a meeting on law and order situation in the morning today. The government has decided to deploy additional central forces in the city and continue prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) till further orders. 
 
The chief minister has also sought appointment with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek his intervention to bail out the state from the present crisis as the storage position in reservoirs is poor, Indian news agency ANI reported.&nbsp; 
 
This week&#39;s disturbances, in which dozens of vehicles were set on fire, have been the most serious in the Bengaluru city that is also hailed as the Silicon Valley of India.&nbsp; 
 
At least one person was killed in clashes between protesters and police on Monday that erupted after the apex court&#39;s order.&nbsp; 
 
This month, businesses in the tech hub, which is also Karnataka&#39;s capital, have faced four days of disruption because of protests about the water dispute and an unrelated trade union-organised strike on September 2.&nbsp; 
 
Trade organisation, The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), said it estimated the violence had cost Bengaluru and the wider region up to 250 billion rupees ($3.74 billion) in losses, but it did not give a breakdown of how it came up with that figure, according to Reuters.&nbsp; 
 
Meanwhile, the state road transport buses have started operating to all places except Tamil Nadu. Metro rail has also resumed its service in the city since yesterday night. &nbsp; 
 
Some schools in the Bengaluru city remain shut today in order to avoid inconvenience for students, according to media reports. 
 
The Cauvery river has been the source of tension between the two states for more than a century and violence over who gets access to water has flared before.

Cauvery dispute: India's IT capital limps back to normalcy?

At least 30 Tamil Nadu-registered vehicles were attacked in&nbsp;Karnataka, with stones pelted at them. Some vehicles were also set on fire. 
 
The violence erupted hours after India&#39;s top court ordered Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, modifying an earlier directive that the state release 15,000 cusecs by September 16. 
 
Around 200 people involved in the protests have been detained, the Indian&nbsp;Express quoted the Karnataka home minister as saying.&nbsp; 
 
Some&nbsp;15,000 policemen have been deployed in Bengaluru in the wake of the violence. 
 
Karnataka chief minister&nbsp;Siddaramaiah has also called for an emergency meeting to discuss ways to allay tensions in the state. 
 
He also wrote a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart, informing her that he is &quot;firmly committed to maintaining law and order in the state&quot;. 
 
And he chastised the protesters. &quot;For both states to live in peace, such incidents should not occur,&quot; he said. 
 
Earlier today in Chennai, the&nbsp;capital of Tamil Nadu,&nbsp;a few men attacked a hotel owned by a man from Karnataka. 
 
The dispute, which dates back to the 20th century, stems from Karnataka&#39;s refusal to share Cauvery river waters with Tamil Nadu. Karnataka&nbsp;insists the water-sharing agreement is skewed heavily in favour of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu, on the other hand,&nbsp;says it has 3,000,000 acres of land that are dependent&nbsp;on the release of Cauvery waters.

Asian Development Bank will provide $100 million loan (about Rs 670 crore) to India for irrigation projects, drainage system and water management at the Cauvery delta in Indian state of Tamil Nadu. 
 
The fund will be used to strengthen embankments of six major irrigation water channels in the Vennar system and rehabilitate 13 irrigation pumping schemes at the Cauvery river basin, ADB said in a statement. 
 
The Cauvery river basin is a critical source of water for agriculture, both within Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring states. 
 
Project involves &nbsp;flood forecasting, warning systems installation&nbsp; 
 
A lack of investment over many years has left irrigation systems unable to meet user demand and increasingly vulnerable to floods and droughts, ADB said. 
 
&quot;The vast majority of the delta&#39;s population is engaged in farming and fishing. They can no longer rely on availability of water for their livelihoods, and flooding is common during the erratic northeast monsoon,&quot; said Raj Kumar, Joint Secretary (Multilateral Institutions), Department of Economic Affairs. 
 
He added saying, &quot;Their plight may only worsen with climate change. The project aims to improve deteriorated infrastructure and will provide flood protection and renewed access to irrigation.&quot;&nbsp; 
 
ADB said communities will be involved in planning and delivery of water services. 
 
The project involves flood forecasting and warning systems installation, and a flood risks map will also be drawn up to help communities respond more effectively to extreme events. 
 
The Resources Department of Tamil Nadu will be responsible for implementing the project. The project is expected to be completed by December 2020. 
 
The loan from ADB&#39;s ordinary capital resources has a 25-year term. 
 
The Manila-headquartered ADB, owned by 67 member nations of which 48 are from the Asian region, assisted loans worth USD 27.2 billion in 2015.
