Researchers have made a new AI model that predicts irregular heartbeats like atrial fibrillation, a common type of heart rhythm problem. It's about 80 per cent&nbsp;accurate and can give warnings 30 minutes before the irregular heartbeat starts.

This model could be put on smartphones to read data from smartwatches, helping people take action to keep their heart rhythms stable. The study has been published&nbsp;in the journal Patterns.

To develop the model, the team used&nbsp;24-hour recordings collected from 350 patients at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China.

Named WARN (Warning of Atrial fibRillatioN), the model relies on deep-learning, a form of machine-learning AI algorithms that discern patterns from historical data to forecast outcomes. Deep-learning is distinguished by its multi-layered decision-making process.

The researchers observed that WARN issued advance alerts, typically 30 minutes ahead of atrial fibrillation onset, marking it as the initial method to offer warnings significantly prior to the event, they remarked.

"We used heart rate data to train a deep learning model that can recognise different phases -- (normal) sinus rhythm, pre-atrial fibrillation and atrial fibrillation -- and calculate a 'probability of danger' that the patient will have an imminent episode," Jorge Goncalves, from the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), University of Luxembourg, and the study's corresponding author, said.

Goncalves mentioned that as atrial fibrillation approaches, the likelihood steadily rises until it surpasses a predefined threshold, triggering an early warning.

The researchers noted that due to its low computational requirements, the AI model is "well-suited for incorporation into wearable devices."

A 73-year-old man from Alabama, US, died due to cardiac arrest after he couldn’t secure an ICU bed in 43 hospitals across three states as they were already filled up by Covid patients.

Ray DeMonia, an antique dealer, died on September 1 in a Mississippi hospital, about 322 kilometres from his home because there were no cardiac ICU beds nearby, his daughter Raven DeMonia told The Washington Post.

DeMonia went to Cullman Regional Medical Center on August 23 because he was having heart problems, she said.

Raven said her mother got a call from the hospital staff about 12 hours after he was admitted, saying that the staff had called 43 hospitals and were unable to find a “specialized cardiac ICU bed.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Alabama has one of the highest rates of new cases, with 541 per 100,000 testing positive&nbsp;in the last week.

In DeMonia’s obituary, the family urged everyone to get vaccinated to prevent others from being denied facilities due to a lack of resources.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the ICU capacity in Alabama has been at maximum in recent weeks, with COVID-19 patients occupying about half of the intensive care beds.

Dr Scott Harris, the head of the Alabama Department of Public Health, last week said the state was continuing to experience “a real crisis” with ICU bed capacity.

“The numbers aren’t great. But the numbers at least have not continued to go up,” he was quoted as saying by local media.

Cardiac patient dies after failing to get ICU bed in 43 US hospitals occupied by COVID patients

Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive arrested in the murder case of her daughter Sheena Bora, was admitted to J J Hospital, where she was brought in a "semi-conscious" state last night, an official said today.

Mukerjea, 46, who was lodged in Byculla jail in South Mumbai under judicial custody, has been admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of the state-run hospital.

"She was brought to the hospital in a semi-conscious state around midnight last night. She is currently undergoing treatment in the CCU. Her condition is relatively better now as compared to the state she was brought to the hospital," S D Nanandkar, dean of J J Hospital, said.

The former co-founder of INX Media, arrested in August 2015, is facing trial in the Sheena Bora murder case in which she is the prime accused.

"She is now stable and we have sent her blood samples for analysis. It is suspected that she consumed some pills, but we are not sure and are examining her," he added.

Sanjay Surase, medical superintendent of the health facility, said Mukerjea was admitted at around 11.15 pm.

She is under the supervision of Wiqar Shaikh, Surase said. 
"Her vitals are stable. She has undergone a series of medical tests, including CT scan and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), and their reports are awaited," Surase said.

Mukerjea was admitted to the hospital twice in October 2015. First in early October when she collapsed in the prison. She was again admitted to the hospital in October-end after her platelet levels dropped.

Bora, 24, was abducted and killed on April 24, 2012, over a financial dispute. Her body was disposed of in a forest in adjoining Raigad district, police had said.

Her mother Indrani, Indrani's former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai were arrested for the crime. Rai later became an approver (prosecution witness).

Mukerjea's current husband Peter Mukerjea, a former media baron, was subsequently arrested for allegedly being a party to the conspiracy.

The murder case was initially handled by the Mumbai Police and later transferred to the CBI.

The day is meant to draw&nbsp;attention to issues surrounding the <a href="https://www.oxfamindia.org/blog/974/should-we-only-give-attention-women%E2%80%99s-health-international-day-action%3F">reproductive and sexual health</a> of women.&nbsp;But we will use this opportunity to talk about the health of Indian women in a broader sense.

To do this, we will look at the diseases Indian women die from,&nbsp;the ones government interventions in public health should be most focused on. The most recent data available on the causes of death is in <a href="http://www.censusindia.gov.in/2011-Documents/mccd_Report1/mccd_report_2014.pdf">a report</a> for the year&nbsp;2014, the Report on medical certification of cause of death from the Indian government. This is based on&nbsp;data that has been collected from the forms doctors fill up after a patient dies.

The report has data on the causes of death for 3,99,535 women in 2014. There were deaths registered for which no cause-of-death data was available but despite that this report should still give us a good idea of the &#39;disease burden&#39; faced by women in India.

To understand how this disease burden changes as women grow older, let&#39;s divide the women who died into five age groups: 0-14, 15-34, 35-54, 55-69 and those over 70.

Girls aged 0-14

This is an age at which girls are at their most vulnerable.&nbsp;52% of the deaths in this age group were caused by perinatal conditions. These are conditions that emerge before, during and immediately after birth and include fetal malnutrition and birth trauma.
