<p>The procurement was cleared at a meeting chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.</p>

<p>The weapons will be used by troops deployed along the borders.</p>

<p>Army Chief Bipin Rawat has in the past asked for modernisation of the armed forces since future wars, he said, would be fought in difficult circumstances.</p>

<p>He further assured that there would be full utilisation of technology if the government assist armed forces.</p>

<p>According to reports, the army has been planning to equip around a lakh soldiers with assault rifles this year.</p>

<p>The rifles will be replacing more than two-decade-old weapons that have outlived its usefulness.</p>
