Most of these young candidates - nearly 60 per cent - are entrepreneurs, journalists, teachers or former government employees.&nbsp;

As polling is set to take place under the shadow of gun and terror, the Taliban has asked the candidates and voters to boycott the elections but still, over 2,000 candidates, including over 400 women, have braved the violence for a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/understanding-the-afghanistan-parliamentary-elections-171961">democratic Afghanistan</a>.&nbsp;

Here are some of the&nbsp;candidates and their stories:&nbsp;

Twenty-six-year-old Javid Faisal was until recently a deputy spokesperson for Abdullah Abdullah, chief executive of Afghanistan.&nbsp;

Faisal is running for parliament from Kandahar which is the second largest city of Afghanistan but Taliban remains active in the province. It is feared that voting may be disrupted in Kandahar with the Taliban striking in the city with a deadly attack which&nbsp;killed the Abdul Razeq on Thursday.&nbsp;

Faisal's campaign centres around issues such as education, employment and basic amenities such as water.&nbsp;

Next is 38-year-old Narinder Singh, a Sikh-Afghan. Singh is the only Sikh candidate in the election. He decided to contest the election after his father - Avtar Singh Khalsa - was killed in a suicide attack carried out by the Islamic State terror group in the eastern city of Jalalabad.&nbsp;

The <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/islamic-state-claims-responsibility-for-attack-on-sikhs-hindus-in-jalalabad-148598">attack also killed</a> 19 other Sikh- Afghans. At the time, Khalsa was running for the Afghan parliament.&nbsp;

Now, Khalsa's son is contesting in the only seat reserved for Sikh and Hindu candidates. Narinder Singh laments that the Sikh community continues to live in fear and without adequate security in spite of the deadly attack.&nbsp;

Zaika Wardak, is an independent candidate contesting from Kabul. Zaika's father - General Abdul Ali Wardak - was killed during the communist take-over in 1978.&nbsp;

Her brother, a former army general Zalmay Wardak, who was a candidate in the election, was killed in August this year. She also lost her husband in a car accident in 2011.&nbsp;

She is an engineer by training and heads an association for female engineers in the Afghan capital.&nbsp;

There have been reports here that Cambridge Analytica — the UK firm accused of trying to swing the US presidential election Trump's way — may have been engaged by political parties here.&nbsp;

"The Congress, after repeated defeat in elections, is spreading lies. Earlier, out of 50 things they said there were 5-10 lies. Now, out of the 50 things they say, 40-45 are lies and the rest five would also lack clarity," Modi said.&nbsp;

The prime minister added there was a need to cleanse Indian politics of Congress culture.

"The mainstream of India's political culture is associated with Congress' misdeeds. Unless we liberate this mainstream from Congress culture, we cannot cleanse Indian politics," he said.

Modi also seemed to refer to pre-poll surveys indicating a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/karnataka-elections-survey-indicates-photo-finish-by-congress-bjp-132478">photo finish</a> by the Congress and BJP in the upcoming Karnataka elections.&nbsp;

A record number of 20 Indian Americans are running for US Congressional elections this year. Collectively they have raised more than $ 5.5 million, as per latest official figures, with seven of them raising over a million each. 
 
With six months still to go for the November Congressional election, except for Hiral Tipirneni who is running for April 24 special elections in Arizona, the figure of more than USD 15.5 million raised by Indian Americans so far that could be a record in itself for any ethnic community in the US.&nbsp;

As per the latest fund-raising figures released by the Federal Election Commission, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi from Illinois has raised maximum over $ 3.5 million. Mr Krishnamoorthi is seeking his re-election from the eighth Congressional district in Illinois. Pitted against him is Indian American Jitender Digankar from the Republican party.&nbsp; 
 
Indian-American scientist and entrepreneur Shiv Ayyadurai, who is running as an independent candidate for the US Senate seat from Massachusetts.&nbsp;

Three other Indian American Congressmen Ro Khanna, Dr Ami Bera and Pramila Jayapal each have raise more than a million each. Krishnamoorthi, Khanna, Bera and Jayapal are the four Indian Americans in the current House of Representative. They are collectively called Samosa Caucus. 
 
According to Federal Election Commission Ro Khanna, seeking re-election from California's 17th Congressional district had raised nearly $2 million ($1.92 million to be precise) till March 31.&nbsp; 
 
He is followed by Dr Ami Bera ($ 1.7 million), who is seeking his fourth consecutive term in the US House of Representative from the seventh Congressional District in California. 
 
Pramila Jayapal, the first ever Indian-American to be elected to the House of Representative has raised $ 1.3 million. She is seeking her re-election from the seventh Congressional District of Washington State.&nbsp; 
 
In addition to Jayapal, four other Indian American women are running for the US House of Representatives Hiral Tipirneni from eights Congressional District of Arizona Aruna Miller from sixth Congressional District of Maryland, Anita Malik from sixth Congressional District of Arizona and Saira Rao from the first Congressional District of Colorado. 
 
All four are from the Democratic party. This week all eyes are on Tipirneni as latest polls suggests that in the April 24 Special election she might create an upset by winning this Republican stronghold. She had raised $ 670,521 till March 31, according to FEC records.

20 Indian Americans running for US Congress raise more than $15.5 million

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has recommended 109 candidates, who were put on a reserve list by it, for appointment on remaining vacant posts of Civil Services Examination, 2016.

A total of 1099 candidates were declared qualified by the UPSC for the 2016 examination in order of merit for appointment to IAS, IFS, IPS and other central services, as against 1,209 vacancies, results of which were declared on May 31 this year.

The UPSC, in accordance with the Civil Services Examination Rules, was also maintaining a consolidated reserve list in order of merit below the last recommended candidate under the respective categories, the Commission said in a statement today.

&quot;As sought by the Department of Personnel and Training, the Commission has now recommended 109 candidates which include 87 General, 19 OBC, 1 SC and 2 ST, to fill up the remaining posts based on the Civil Services Examination, 2016,&quot; it said.

The five Congress rebels who have been given tickets are Raghavji Patel, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Ramsinh Parmar, Mansinh Chauhan and C K Raolji. They had supported the BJP during the presidential election and during Congress leader Ahmed Patel&#39;s Rajya Sabha election.

The party has named Chief Minister Vijaybhai Rupani as its candidate from Rajkot West.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitinbhai Patel will contest from Mahesana and state party president Jitubhai Vaghani from Bhavnagar West.

Of the 70, 17 are Patels, 18 OBCs, three SCs and 11 STs, party sources said.

A majority of OBC candidates are Thakores followed by Kolis, the sources added.

The names were finalized by BJP&#39;s Central Election Committee, which met on Wednesday.

Fewer candidates could make the election due on October 9 easier to organise, with several politicians who ran last time pledging support for Jude Celestin, who came second in the previous ballot. "This joint effort is a choice for stability and democracy, against corruption and fraudulent election," Celestin told reporters. Jovenel Moise, who came first last time, again registered to run, as did Jean-Charles Moise and Maryse Narcisse who came third and fourth last time. The registration of Moise removes uncertainty over whether his PHTK party would take part in the new election. The party's position had been that irregularities in the first round were not large enough to alter the outcome and that it would be better to hold a run-off vote between Celestin and Moise, a position supported by Washington and other donors. "There is no question of abandoning the election process because we believe in democracy, and the only way to access power in a democracy is through election," said Rudy Heriveaux, a spokesman for Moise's PHTK party,. Haiti's last elected president left office without an elected successor, paving the way for an interim government led by President Jocelerme Privert. He failed to organise elections by May in a timeline set in a multi-party deal, but may end up staying on to organise the next vote. "We continue to believe that Jocelerme Privert should leave power because his term is over, and he is manipulating the election process in favor of his political family," Heriveaux said. "If the election is free, fair and democratic, there is no doubt that Jovenel Moise will win," he said. Former presidential candidate, Sauveur Pierre Etienne, who is now supporting Celestin, said he made that choice because he believes Celestin is the best man to lead the country.
