<p>A special team from the district food and drug administration inspected and sealed the shops of two vendors who were selling contaminated buckwheat flour. A case has been filed against them.</p>

<p>The incident was reported from various villages, with complaints filed in the Farah police area of the Mathura district last night. All the affected persons are stable, as confirmed by the officials.</p>

<p>On the occasion of Janmashtami, many individuals follow the ritual&nbsp;of fasting.&nbsp;Many people experienced vomiting, dizziness, and shivering after eating pooris and pakoras made from buckwheat flour,&nbsp;one of the foods that are consumed during fast.</p>

<p>“We had fritters made from buckwheat flour last night. After that, I started vomiting and felt a burning sensation in my stomach,” said Priyanka, a teenager admitted to the government hospital, according to the PTI video.</p>

<p>Mahesh, another resident, said in the PTI video, “My wife has become very weak, sje was almost unconscious.”</p>

<p>Dr. Bhudev Prasad, head of the health department's rapid response team, said similar instances were reported in several districts.</p>

<p>“Teams from the Health Department, Farah Community Health Centre (CHC), and District Hospital responded swiftly. Initially, patients were treated at the CHC, but as numbers increased, they were moved to the District Hospital, the 100-bed Joint Hospital in Vrindavan, and SN Medical College in Agra,” Dr. Prasad said, as quoted by PTI.</p>

<p>Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ajay Kumar Verma, asserted that 43 patients were admitted to the SN Medical College Hospital in Agra, 29 to the District Hospital in Mathura, 15 to the 100-bed Combined Hospital, 15 to Baba Jaigurudev Charitable Hospital, 10 to Chauhan Hospital, and others to the CHC in Farah.</p>

<p>“Patients showing improvement today will be discharged,” Dr. Prasad stated.</p>

<p>The affected people are from Parkham, Baroda, Mirzapur, Makhdoom, and Khairat villages. The flour was purchased by Jhagdu and Rajkumar, who supplied it from a grocery merchant in Farah.</p>

The plants, referred to as solar-powered vacuum cleaners by experts, have an extraordinary ability to suck out heavy metals from soil and rid it completely of all forms of pollutants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One such plant employed in the process is California buckwheat, whose beautiful pink and white flowers have this special ability to detoxify the soil. "That's the miracle of life," Kreigh Hampel, a 68-year-old volunteer was quoted as saying by the Phys.org website.</p>

<h2><strong>How does the detoxification process work?</strong></h2>

<p>Several California plants and fungi such as the telegraph weed, the California bush sunflower and Oyster mushrooms have the ability to suck up heavy metals and help decompose pollutants. They suck up metals like lead into their bodies. And later, when these plants are uprooted from the site, the soil gets effectively sanitised.</p>

<p>“When we pull out the plants, we've removed the lead from the soil," says Danielle Stevenson, a mycologist and the leader of the programme. She says that lead recovered from plants then can be recycled and reused.</p>

The reason is, it's basically the same thing. A lot of our fossil fuels are just dead stuff that got compressed over long periods of time," observes Stevenson.</p>

<h2><strong>Way better than the traditional way of cleaning up sites?</strong></h2>

<p>According to Stevenson, bioremediation techniques are proving to be a highly cost-effective alternative to traditional methods of environmental cleanup.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She explains, "The conventional method of cleaning up sites is just to dig up all the contaminated soil and to dump it somewhere else. That approach doesn't actually solve the problem, right? It just moves it somewhere else." This approach has not only been ineffective in tackling the issue but has also proven to be a financial burden.</p>

<p>Available with add-ons like tempura and sets with rice, its price currently ranges from 290 yen (2.30 USD) up to 500 yen (3.90 USD).</p>

<p>According to the Japan Soba Association, Japan produced only 42 per cent of its buckwheat needs in 2020 despite its iconic status.</p>

<p>The country's Agriculture Ministry said that although it had been filling the gap with imports from Russia it won't be able to continue the practice after Japan imposed sanctions on Russia.</p>
