<p>The former state monopoly reported on Thursday pro forma revenue and core earnings growth for the first time in six years in the year to the end of March. But the cost of transforming the business, and the hit to its free cash flow took a toll, sending its shares down 7 per cent in morning trade, Reuters reported.</p>

<p>Jansen told Reuters that post fibre roll-out, digitising the way it worked, adopting artificial intelligence (AI) and simplifying its structure, BT would opt for a much smaller workforce by the end of 2020s.</p>

<p>"New BT Group will be a leaner business with a brighter future," he said.</p>

<p>When the job cuts take place, BT's total workforce would reduce from 130,000 to between 75,000 and 90,000 by financial year 2030. Some 30,000 of its current employees are contractors.</p>

<p>Jansen said BT's ongoing job cuts would accelerate as it completes its fibre build and switches off 3G.</p>

<p>"It's a rolling programme (of cuts), but it's a five-to-seven-year landing zone," he told reporters.</p>

<h2><strong>"No surprise"</strong></h2>

<p>The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said that the job cuts were "no surprise" given that a lot of changes were taking place in infrastructure and technology.</p>

<p>Talks between BT and the CWU were necessary to ensure a smooth transition on that front, said the union, adding that BT should aim to keep direct jobs and cut contractors.</p>

<p>Vodafone, the rival of BT, said on Tuesday that in order to restore its competitive edge, it would cut 11,000 jobs worldwide.</p>

<p>Jansen said around 10,000 fewer network engineers would be needed to run digital networks, while technologies like automation and AI would replace another 10,000.</p>

<h2><strong>"Huge opportunities" in AI</strong></h2>

<p>He said that there were "huge opportunities" in using Artificial Intelligence. He added that generative AI large language models would be a leap forward that rivalled the arrival of the smartphone.</p>

<p>"We're not going to be in a situation where people feel like they're dealing with a robot," he said.</p>

<p>"We've got multichannel, we're online, we have got 450 stores, that's not planning on changing."</p>

<p>This comes after UK mobile phone giant Vodafone announced to cut 11,000 jobs, one-tenth of its workforce, over three years. After the jobs cuts, the workforce will&nbsp;come down in between 75,000 and 90,000 over the next five to seven years, BT said in a statement.</p>

<p>On the contrary to the grim side, BT said that once the telecom's full fibre broadband and 5G network are launched the firm would not need staff then to be able to maintain it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The slimmed-down group "will be a leaner business with a brighter future" and will "digitise the way we work and simplify our structure".</p>

<h2><strong>BT's revenue dipped&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>BT on Thursday also announced that the firm's net profit soared 50 per cent to £1.9 billion ($2.4 billion) in its fiscal year to March. However, performance-wise the company is not keeping up on its game. The performance was skewed by a one-off tax credit.</p>

British Telecom to make ‘drastic’ job cuts, lay off 55,000 staffers by 2030 in cost-cutting measure

<p>BT has retained the UK broadcast rights to Champions League soccer for three years from 2021 at an annual cost of 400 million pounds ($512 million), despite reported competition from rival Sky.</p>

<p>The price is in line with the current three-year contract but BT said it covered an additional 77 matches as well as the rights to highlights and in-match clips.</p>

<p>The renegotiation had been seen as a test of the appetite of BT Chief Executive Philip Jansen, who took on the role in February, to spend on sports rights.</p>

<p>The deal also covers matches from the Europa League and a planned third competition for European clubs, BT said in a statement on Friday.</p>

<p>"We're delighted to remain the home of UEFA Champions League in the UK," said Marc Allera, CEO of BT's Consumer Division</p>

<p>BT has had the rights to European club soccer since 2015 after ousting Sky and ITV. Sky, now owned by U.S. media group Comcast, had been expected to bid to win back the rights.</p>

<p>The news helped BT shares to make up some lost ground after Britain's opposition Labour Party said it would nationalise BT's fixed line network to provide free full-fibre broadband for all if it wins the election next month.</p>
