Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who has often been criticised for his anti-vaccine stance, has said that he won’t inoculate his 11-year-old daughter against Covid infection.

“Children have not been dying in a way that justifies a vaccine for children,” he told reporters in the southern state of Santa Catarina.

Vaccination for children had been a hot topic in Brazil. A government coronavirus advisory body released a note saying that 301 children between the ages of 5 and 11 have died of COVID-19 in Brazil.

The county’s national health regulator Anvisa faced backlash and death threats from Bolsonaro supporters after approving the Pfizer vaccine for children 5 to 11-year-olds earlier this month.

Bolsonaro at that time further added fuel to the fire by saying that he wanted to make public the names of the officials who had signed off on the approval.

On Monday, the 66-year-old right-wing leader said that nation’s health minister Marcelo Queiroga, would divulge on January 5 Brazil’s vaccination plans for 5 to 11-year-olds.

“I’ve talked with Queiroga about this. On the 5th, he should publish a note about how vaccinating children should be carried out,” Bolsonaro said, adding, “I hope there’s no judicial interference. I hope. Because my daughter isn’t getting vaccinated, let me make that very clear.”

On December&nbsp;23, Queiroga had created controversy by saying that the number of COVID-19 deaths among children did not justify an emergency authorization.

He has also, several times, broken Covid restrictions imposed by health experts and has in some ways promoted vaccine hesitancy in Brazil.

Renan Calheiros in a radio interview said the probe will recommend charges such as genocide against the country's indigenous population, malfeasance, irregular use of public funds, violation of sanitary measures, incitement to crime and forgery of private documents, Reuters&nbsp;reported.&nbsp;

Along with Bolsonaro, the President’s sons and his former health minister Eduardo Pazuello are also likely to&nbsp;be charged, Calheiros said.

The report is scheduled to be released by the Senate investigative panel next Tuesday. And on the next day, the panel's members would vote on approving the text before sending it on the attorney general’s office on Thursday to decide if Bolsonaro and others should be charged.

The attorney general's office can charge the president, but the Supreme Court, which would try him, must request authorization from the lower house to proceed. Experts say the lower house is highly unlikely to sign off on such a request.

The far-right president, who himself was infected with the coronavirus in July 2020, has spoken against lockdown measures, pushed unproven cures, sowed vaccine doubts and downplayed the severity of COVID-19.

Bolsonaro's approval ratings have fallen in public opinion polls over his handling of the public health crisis. More than 600,000 people have died from COVID-19 in Brazil, second only to the United States.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro may face criminal charges for Covid deaths

Brazil’s health minister Marcelo Queiroga has tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the UN General Assembly in New York with President Jair Bolsonaro, according to an official statement.

The Brazilian government said on Tuesday that Queiroga, who had received a COVID-19 vaccine, was the second member of Bolsonaro’s entourage to test positive for the virus since arriving in New York for the 76th session of the UNGA.

“The other members of the delegation have been tested and are negative," said the official Brazilian government press release.

The 55-year-old health minister will remain quarantined in the United States, even as the rest of the delegation has returned to Brazil.

According to reports, Queiroga was with Bolsonaro at several events, including a meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday.

Bolsonaro, a vaccine sceptic and who appeared without a mask on several occasions during his visit to the US, has repeatedly asserted that he would be “the last” Brazilian to get the jab.

In his speech to world leaders at a meeting where the Covid pandemic was top of the agenda, Bolsonaro said his government did not support the use of a vaccine passport and stood by treatment of the virus with unproven drugs such as the anti-malarial hydroxychloroquine.

COVID-19 has killed 591,440 Brazilians in the world’s second-deadliest outbreak after the United States.

As vaccination advances in the country, the rolling 14-day average of COVID deaths has fallen to 519 a day, compared with almost 3,000 at the peak of the pandemic in April.
