The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in India has sent notices to the Maharashtra government and the state’s police chief over 11 labourers allegedly being kept chained in Osmanabad district by a contractor to dig wells and prevent them from escaping, officials said on Monday.

Forty-two bonded labourers, including children, were rescued from two wood cutting units on the same day from Kancheepuram and Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu. After a tip-off from an NGO, sub collectors of Kancheepuram and Vellore visited the spots and were shocked to see the reality.
