Microsoft licenses the data in its Bing search index, a map of the internet that can be quickly scanned in real-time, to other companies that offer web searches such as Yahoo and DuckDuckGo.&nbsp;

Last month, Microsoft integrated a cousin of ChatGPT into Bing and its rivals also moved to roll out their artificial intelligence chatbots. This week, Google released its AI product, Bard. DuckDuckGo,&nbsp;which emphasises on protecting searchers' privacy,&nbsp;came up with DuckAssist, which answers questions by scanning a specific set of sources.&nbsp;

Two relatively new search engines You.com and Neeva Inc. also debuted AI-fuelled search services YouChat and NeevaAI. These search chatbots aim to combine the conversational skills of ChatGPT with the information provided by a conventional search engine.&nbsp;

Bloomberg reported on Friday that the regular search engines of DuckDuckGo, You.com and Neeva use Bing to provide some of their information as indexing the entire web is costly.&nbsp;

Sources told the news agency that Microsoft told at least two customers that the use of Bing search index to feed their AI chat tools violates the terms of their contract. They added that Microsoft may terminate licenses providing access to its search index.&nbsp;

The report also said that if they are cut off from the index, smaller search engines would have a hard time finding an alternative. At present, Microsoft and Google are the only two organisations that index the entire web. Google's limitations on the use of its index have led to nearly all other search engines using Microsoft's Bing.&nbsp;

The move is aimed to stop users from confusing the chatbot model and help avoid conversations that may hurt the brand. "As we mentioned recently, very long chat sessions can confuse the underlying chat model in the new Bing. To address these issues, we have implemented some changes to help focus the chat sessions," read a statement released by Microsoft. The tech giant justified its decision saying most users found the answer they were looking for within the first five messages. "Our data has shown that the vast majority of you find the answers you’re looking for within 5 turns and that only ~1 per cent of chat conversations have 50+ messages." "As we continue to get your feedback, we will explore expanding the caps on chat sessions to further enhance search and discovery experiences." The Bing chatbot was designed by Microsoft and the start-up OpenAI- which launched ChatGPT in November last year that gained prominence for its detailed responses and articulate answers.&nbsp;

On Reddit, a forum devoted to the AI-enhanced version of Bing shared the experiences of users on Wednesday (February 15), where they said the chatbot, scolded, lied and was confused, news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Posts shared in the Reddit forum included screenshots of exchanges with Bing and told of stumbles such as insisting that the current year is 2022 and telling someone they have "not been a good user" for challenging its veracity. Others told of the Chatbot advising on hacking a Facebook account, plagiarising an essay and also telling a racist joke.&nbsp;

Speaking to AFP, a spokesperson from Microsoft said, "The new Bing tries to keep answers fun and factual, but given this is an early preview, it can sometimes show unexpected or inaccurate answers for different reasons, for example, the length or context of the conversation." The spokesperson added that as the company continues to learn from these interactions, it is adjusting its responses to create coherent, relevant and positive answers.&nbsp;

The above stumbles of Microsoft echoed the difficulties which were seen by Google's chatbot Bard last week, where it made a mistake in an advertisement. The AFP report said that the error led to &nbsp;Google's share price spiralling down by more than seven per cent on the announcement date.
