Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed condolences to families of those who lost their lives due to heavy rain and lightning in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

"I`ve received tragic news about death of many people due to heavy rain and lightning in some districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The state governments are engaged in relief work with promptness. I express my condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in this disaster," the Prime Minister tweeted.

At least 83 people died due to thunderstorms in Bihar in the last 24 hours, according to the Chief Minister`s Office. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar announced Rs 4 lakhs each for the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, it killed&nbsp;24 people while&nbsp;12 were injured in the different parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed his condolences and announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of deceased.

18 were killed as lightning struck them in different districts of Bihar and five others lost their lives in West Champaran district in a wall collapse due to a storm.

Out of the 18 killed in the lightning strike, five people were from East Champaran, four from Jamui, one in West Champaran, two each in Munger, Bhagalpur and Madhepura and one each in Vaishali and Samastipur districts.

Earlier on Saturday, at least three people were killed and nine others injured after being hit by lighting in Uttarkashi.&nbsp;

The death toll due to lightning in India&#39;s eastern state of Bihar rose to 59 after four more bodies were recovered from Nalanda district on Wednesday. 
 
Heavy overnight rains accompanied by thunderbolts at regular intervals had wreaked havoc in the state, killing over 50 and injuring several others on Tuesday. 
 
Village development officer Ram G Pawan said the victims had taken shelter at a house to avoid rains when lightning hit them, killing four persons on the spot. 
 
&quot;To escape (rain), they took shelter in a house, but lightning struck them. Four persons died on the spot while two others were injured, out of which one is serious, he has been sent (to Patna hospital) through an ambulance,&quot; said Paswan. 
 
&quot;Around 10-20 people were sitting, when lightning struck, leaving 11-12 people unconscious, four are dead while the rest are injured,&quot; said Ravindra Kumar, a local. 
 
Reports of causalities are also pouring in from other parts of the state. Local authorities said that the death toll is likely to rise. 
 
In the capital city of Patna, 13 people have been reportedly injured in the lightning. 
 
Meanwhile, state chief minister Nitish Kumar, had announced an ex-gratia amount of Rupees 4 lakh ($6,000) for the kin of the deceased. 
 
The southwest monsoon has further advanced in Bihar, covering almost the entire state, including the capital.
