The extraordinary meeting -- scheduled for Thursday at the request of the Palestinian leadership -- will bring together Arab foreign ministers via video conference, rather than a face-to-face meeting, due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the report added.&nbsp;

The Arab League's deputy secretary Hossam Zaki said the ministers will "discuss in their virtual meeting providing political, legal and financial support to the Palestinian leadership to confront the Israeli plans".&nbsp;

The meeting comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his political rival Benny Gantz signed a deal for a unity government that could accelerate the premier's plans to annex parts of the West Bank in the coming months.&nbsp;

Those Israeli plans -- while subject to caveats, including the need to maintain "regional stability" and uphold the peace agreement with Jordan -- have drawn wide criticism including from the United Nations and the European Union.

Arab League chief Ahmed Ahmed Aboul Gheit had last week sent a message to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warning against Israel's plans saying they risk "igniting tension in the region".&nbsp;

He also accused Israel of "exploiting the world's preoccupation with the novel coronavirus to impose a new reality on the ground".&nbsp;

Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Six-Day War and has since extended its control by expanding its settlements there.&nbsp;

Chants against "corruption" and for "safeguarding democracy" were raised by the protesters who were following social distancing rules and wearing face masks to avoid the spread of novel coronavirus.&nbsp;

Protesters said that Netanyahu is threatening democracy and several amongst them waved black flags with some holding placards that said: "The people against the government."

As per the deal agreed upon by both the leaders, Netanyahu will serve as the prime minister for the first half of a three-year-term, and Gantz will then take over the premiership from him in October next year.

Gantz, ex-General, will serve as defence minister during Netanyahu's term and the next elections would be held 18 months later.&nbsp;

The deal came after both Netanyahu and Gantz failed to get a complete majority in spite of three general elections and would end a 16-month deadlock.&nbsp;

Earlier, Netanyahu in January became the first Israel prime minister to be indicted following charges of bribery, fraud, among others.&nbsp;

Netanyahu's trial was supposed to be open in March but postponed until May 24.&nbsp;

"Upon finalisation of the meeting between the respective negotiating teams last night, it was concluded to continue discussions today, with the aim of reaching an agreement toward the establishment of a national emergency government," the statement said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Rivlin officially informed Gantz that his mandate had expired.&nbsp;

Rivlin "informed speaker of the Knesset Benny Gantz that he is entrusting the Knesset with the task of forming a government," a statement from his office said.&nbsp;

The president noted that neither Gantz nor Netanyahu currently has the backing of a majority of lawmakers in&nbsp;Israel's deeply divided 120-member parliament.&nbsp;

But as the country grapples with the coronavirus, Rivlin implored lawmakers to find a solution that enables&nbsp;Israel&nbsp;to avoid a fourth election.

Israel MPs tasked with ending deadlock over unity government

Israeli Prime Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/coronavirus-crisis-delays-start-of-netanyahu-corruption-trial-286472">Benjamin Netanyahu</a> re-entered quarantine for seven-days on Thursday as a precautionary measure after the health minister Yaakov Litzmand tested positive for the coronavirus.

Netanyahu's earlier quarantine ended in Wednesday which was imposed earlier this week after&nbsp;one of his staffers tested positive for the deadly virus which has so far infected almost a million people worldwide.

Israel has reported at least 29 deaths and more than 6,200 infections. Tight curbs have confined Israelis to their homes, forcing businesses to close and sending unemployment over 24%.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu announced new curbs on Wednesday to deter movement around Bnei Brak, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish town that has suffered a disproportionately large outbreak.

"The situation there is horrible. Every day we stall, we put lives at risk," Litzman had said in an interview published on Tuesday in the Yedioth Ahronot newspaper.

"The public now has to listen to the health ministry."

"The High Court ruling constitutes crude and arrogant intervention of the judiciary in the matters of the elected legislature," Edelstein said.&nbsp;

Benjamin Netanyahu ally resigns as speaker of Israel parliament

Israel's internal security agency Shin Bet confirmed Tuesday it has been mandated to collect information about citizens to fight the spread of the deadly coronavirus, a task it was undertaking with "immediate" effect.

The measure was declared by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu late on Monday under emergency regulations, after a parliamentary committee tasked with green-lighting the move refused to give it final approval, saying it needed more time.

The government "authorised the Shin Bet to put its advanced technologies in the service of the national effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus," a Shin Bet statement said Tuesday.

A Shin Bet spokesperson separately told the source that the policy has taken "immediate" effect.

Involving the spy agency in the fight against coronavirus sets "a dangerous precedent", according to Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler of the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), speaking before the emergency regulations.&nbsp; &nbsp;

In the Shin Bet statement, agency chief Nadav Argaman said the agency was approached by the health ministry to help track coronavirus carriers "after it emerged that other authorities in the state do not have the necessary technologies".

"The Shin Bet is aware this is a task that goes beyond its routine anti-terror activities, therefore the request was discussed with and approved by the attorney general, with oversight and regulating mechanisms established," Argaman said.

Netanyahu's office refused to provide details about the monitoring techniques to be used.

But copies of the emergency regulations leaked to Israeli media showed that police would be able to retrieve location data of coronavirus carriers as well as quarantined people from phone companies, without a court order.

The Shin Bet would also be able to use the location data of coronavirus carriers for the 14 days preceding their diagnosis "to identify their routes and the people with whom they came in contact with," the leaked copy of the decision said.

'No active penetration'

Argaman said the information would be given to the health ministry and not saved by the Shin Bet.

He stressed that given the severity of the crisis Shin Bet had a responsibility to use its "unique skills" to help contain the pandemic.

Netanyahu had on Saturday said he wanted "technologies used in the war against terror" deployed against the COVID-19 disease.

His cabinet then approved the measures last Sunday.

He summoned the two rivals on Sunday for an "urgent conversation", which ended without agreement, but Likud and Blue and White said the talks would continue.

After the meeting, Rivlin emphasised the need to "intensify direct contacts between the Likud and Kachol Lavan negotiating teams, and welcomed both sides' willingness to do so".

Authorities have banned gatherings of more than 10 people and ordered schools, universities, restaurants and cafes to close, among other measures.

On top of support from Blue and White and a smaller centre-left alliance, Gantz was also recommended by the mainly Arab Joint List and the secular, nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu party.&nbsp;

Aside from being anti-Netanyahu, the Joint List and Yisrael Beiteinu have almost no political common ground.&nbsp;

Netanyahu's alliance, seen as more cohesive, includes his right-wing Likud as well as its religious, nationalist ally Yemina and two ultra-Orthodox parties.&nbsp;

Israeli researchers have been hard at work developing a vaccine. Ofir Akunis, Israel’s minister of science and technology, praised scientists at the Galilee Research Institute (MIGAL) who said they could have a vaccine ready in three weeks and ready for distribution in 90 days.

“Congratulations to MIGAL on this exciting breakthrough. I am confident that there will be further rapid progress, enabling us to provide a needed response to the grave global COVID-19 threat,” Okunis said in response to the news.

14 day ‘isolation’ if anyone enter the country: Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's challenger Benny Gantz is to receive state protection following online threats, a domestic security agency announced on Tuesday.

"The prime minister has approved the Shin Bet's recommendation for close protection of Mr Gantz," a statement from the agency said.
