Tens of thousands of people have marked the first anniversary of a train station roof collapse in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, observing 16 minutes of silence for the 16 victims of the tragedy.

Serbia Anti-Government Protests: Protesters Demand Aleksander Vucic's Ouster

Thousands of mainly young people in Serbia embarked on a two-day march from Belgrade on Thursday, aiming to join a major rally in the country's north this weekend that will mark the anniversary of a deadly train station disaster.

Thousands of protesters, mostly students, gathered in Serbia's capital on Friday ahead of a planned weekend of large-scale anti-government demonstrations, with many traveling hundreds of miles on foot or by bike. President Aleksandar Vucic stated he had urged the police to exercise restraint but to arrest anyone causing trouble. "The state... will do everything to maintain peace. Those who threaten peace will be detained," he said during a news conference. The protests are expected to be the largest in decades. The nearly daily student protests, which began in December, were sparked by the deaths of 15 people when a roof collapsed at a railway station in Novi Sad on November 1, a tragedy that opponents attribute to corruption under Vucic's leadership.

Belgrade is witnessing fresh anti-government protests as thousands take to the streets against corruption. Angry student protesters have toppled a tractor, waving flags and lighting fireworks in defiance. President Aleksandar Vučić has declared the demonstrations illegal as tensions rise.

In Serbia, angry protesters have taken to the streets, demanding the arrest of President Aleksandar Vučić. The demonstrations, fueled by widespread dissatisfaction with his government and policies, reflect growing frustration among citizens over issues such as corruption, economic challenges, and perceived authoritarianism. The unrest marks a significant moment in Serbian politics, as calls for accountability and change intensify amid a backdrop of social discontent.

Serbia school shooting: At least nine people killed, including eight students

Serbia's capital Belgrade held pride march during which the protesters clashed with the police and injured 10 officers. One of the participants of the march stated that it is an important day not only for the rights of gay community in India but also to fight against the extreme right-wing organisations.

Serbia holds pride march; protesters hurl stones, stun grenades at police

Clashes broke out between the police and right wing protesters during an LGBTQ+ march organised to mark the end of the Euro pride week. Tensions soared in the Serbian capital of Belgrade as ultra-nationalist and anti-gay groups hurled stun grenades and stones at the police.

10 police officers injured in clashes during gay pride parade in Serbia

Serbian police clashed with right-wing protesters and detained 64 people in Belgrade EuroPride on Saturday.

Citing security concerns after right-wing groups threatened to hold protests, the interior ministry banned the march earlier this week.

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said, "I am very proud that we managed to avoid more serious incidents."

Adding that 10 police officers were slightly injured after a group of hooligans threw flares at the police.

Despite some progress over the years in reducing discrimination, Gay marriage is not legally recognised in Serbia and homophobia remains deep-seated.

With officers pushing back the small groups of counter-demonstrators waving crosses and religious insignia, there was a heavy police presence around the Pride rally.

Following intense international pressure to allow the march, Serbia barred any counter-protests but some far-right groups gathered in front of several Belgrade churches.

Despite the imposition of the ban at least, 15 members of the European Parliament joined the Pride march in a show of solidarity.

After far-right groups targeted the event Belgrade Pride marches in 2001 and again in 2010 were marred by violence and rioting.

Drawing criticism from human rights groups and others, previous Serbian governments have banned Pride parades.

EuroPride organisers approved Belgrade as this year's host as recent Pride marches in Serbia have passed off peacefully and the country is a candidate to join the European Union.
