Military bands enthrall audience at ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony in Delhi

Indian tunes will be the focus of today's "Beating the Retreat" ceremony which will take place at Delhi's Vijay Chowk at 5 pm. The ceremony, held every year on January 29, marks the culmination of the four-day&nbsp;Republic Day celebrations.

In all, there will be 27 performances by bands from the Army, Navy, Air Force, along with bands from the state police and Central armed police force services.&nbsp;

Of the 27 performances, 19 have been composed by Indian musicians. These are ‘Indian Star’, ‘Paharon ki Rani’, ‘Kumaoni Geet’, ‘Jai Janam Bhumi’, ‘Queen of Satpura’, ‘Marooni’, ‘Vijay’, ‘Soldier-My Valentine’, ‘Bhupal’, ‘Vijay Bharat’, ‘Aakash Ganga’, ‘Gangotri’, ‘Namaste India’, ‘Samudrika’, ‘Jai Bharat’, ‘Young India’, ‘Veerta Ki Misal’, ‘Amar Senani’ and ‘Bhumiputra’.&nbsp;

Remember this year, Sankhnaad, a martial tune from the Indian classical music was played for the first time at Rajpath during the republic day parade. It is the first original martial tune of independent India. The composition of the tune is the combination of 3 paramparic ragas--Paag bilaskhani todi, Raag Bhairavi, Raag Kirvani.

The 8 western tunes are-- ‘Fanfare by Buglers’, ‘Sound Barrier’, ‘Emblazoned’, ‘Twilight’, ‘Alert (Post Horn Gallop)’, ‘Space Flight’, ‘Drummers Call’ and ‘Abide with me’. "Abide with me" is said to be the favourite of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.

The event will finish with ‘Sare Jahan se Acha’.

The principal conductor of Beating the Retreat ceremony will be Cdr Vijay D’Cruz.&nbsp;

According to an army release, "the ceremony traces its origins to the early 1950s when Major Roberts of the Indian Army indigenously developed the unique ceremony of display by the massed bands."

'Beating Retreat’ marks a military tradition when the troops ceased fighting returned to the camps at sunset.

The colourful event can be watched live on the state broadcaster Doordarshan post 5 pm. &nbsp;
