<p>The East Asia Summit is the premier leaders-led forum in the Indo-Pacific. Since its inception in 2005, it has played a significant role in the strategic and geopolitical evolution of East Asia.</p>

<p>Apart from the 10 ASEAN Member states, East Asia Summit includes India, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Russia, the release added.</p>

<p>India, being a founding member of the East Asia Summit, is committed to strengthening the East Asia Summit and making it more effective for dealing with contemporary challenges, the release read.</p>

<p>On Thursday, PM Modi will review the status of the ASEAN-India Strategic Partnership at the 18th ASEAN-India Summit.</p>

<p>He is participating in the summit at the invitation of the Sultan of Brunei.</p>

<p>Prime Minister will take stock of progress made in key areas including COVID-19, health, trade and commerce, connectivity, and education and culture. Important regional and international developments including post-pandemic economic recovery will also be discussed.</p>

<p>ASEAN-India summits are held annually and provide the opportunity for India and ASEAN to engage at the highest level.</p>

<p>PM Modi attended the 17th ASEAN-India Summit held virtually in November last year. The latest edition will be the ninth ASEAN-India Summit to be attended by him.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Modi presented the awards to the winning teams at an awards ceremony which was also attended by Education Minister of Singapore Ong Ye Kung.</p>

<p>The teams were chosen after a final pitching session. First prize of SGD 10000, second prize of SGD 6000 and third prize of SGD 4000 was announced for each of the three winners from India and Singapore.</p>

<p>The winning teams from India were IIT Kharagpur, NIT, Trichy and MIT College of Engineering, Pune, the Indian High Commission in Singapore said.</p>

<p>The winning teams from Singapore comprised Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), it said in a statement.</p>

<p>During his official visit to Singapore in June, Modi proposed to his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong that India and Singapore should organise a joint Hackathon to harness and showcase the innovation potential of their youth. The proposal was welcomed by Prime Minister Lee.</p>

<p>The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) conducted the hackathon that included solving eight problem statements.</p>

<p>Twenty teams, each from both the countries comprising university and college students selected on nationwide basis, participated in the event to harness and showcase the innovation potential of the youth. Each of these teams had three students and one mentor.</p>

<p>From India, an 83-member delegation comprising 60 students, 20 mentors and three officials of the AICTE visited Singapore for the event which Modi said is a "boost to technology, innovation and youth power".</p>

<p>The eight 'Problems Statements' presented to the participants were in the areas of mapping, synchronised output of diverse social media, shared digital identity verification, effective number estimate, space management and allotment, effective learning and personal security.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Modi also met the National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets Thursday who were in Singapore as a part of a cadet exchange programme.</p>

<p>"Spent time with NCC cadets, who got the opportunity to come to Singapore as a part of a cadet exchange programme. They shared their memorable learnings and experiences with me," he said.</p>

<p>This will be Prime Minister Modi's fifth engagement with EAS since the summit's inception in 2005.The leaders of the member nations are slated to discuss international development issues like ICT, Smart Cities, Maritime Cooperation, Education, Finance, Food Security, Environment and Energy at the EAS.</p>

<p>The Prime Minister became the first head of government to deliver the keynote address at Singapore Fintech Festival on November 14, where he shared India`s financial inclusion story that has transformed governance and delivery of public services.</p>

<p>He then launched the Application Programming Interface Exchange (APIX) with the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore T&nbsp;Shanmugaratnam.</p>

<p>With China&#39;s controversial military buildup likely to be a major issue at the ASEAN summit, Premier Li Keqiang today clearly reiterated Beijing&#39;s long- held position that it wants to bilaterally resolve its disputes with its neighbours over the South China Sea.</p>

<p>In an article published in leading newspapers here, Li admitted that the bilateral relationship between China and the Philippines had &quot;encountered a setback&quot; due to the South China Sea issue but it was back on track due to appropriate handling of the issue by the two sides.</p>

<p>The Chinese premier, who will be here for the ASEAN and East Asia summits, said Beijing will actively explore joint development of the South China sea to make it a &quot;sea of cooperation and friendship&quot; for the benefit of the two countries.</p>

<p>&quot;China will work with the Philippines to continue to properly handle the maritime issues through friendly bilateral consultation by giving full play to such mechanisms as the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea,&quot; Li wrote.</p>

<p>Ahead of the annual summit of the ASEAN, an influential grouping of 10 South East Asian countries, a number of diplomats said the thorny issue of China&#39;s aggressive military buildup in the South China Sea may be one of the focus areas of the deliberations on Tuesday.</p>

<p>China claims sovereignty over all of South China Sea, a huge source of hydrocarbons. However, several ASEAN member countries including Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei have counter claims.<br />
India has been supporting freedom of navigation and access to resources in the South China Sea in accordance with principles of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.</p>

<p>The ASEAN has been pushing for a legally binding code of conduct for all stakeholders in the South China Sea but Beijing has opposed such a framework asserting it will resolve the dispute with respective countries under a bilateral mechanism.</p>

<p>&quot;The two sides returned to the track of appropriately handling the South China Sea issue through dialogue and consultation, thus removing the stumbling block that has held back our bilateral relations for several years,&quot; Li said.</p>

<p>The controversial issue was also understood to have figured in a meeting of officials from India, the US, Japan, and Australia under the proposed Quadrilateral coalition of the four countries.</p>
