The Central Investigation Agency (CIA) has revealed new details about one of its most famous operations, and more. The spiriting out of six US diplomats who escaped from the US embassy in Tehran in 1979 has inspired a Hollywood movie as well. The film 'Argo' won &nbsp;Academy Award in 2012.

But CIA now officially describes the 1953 coup that it backed as undemocratic. The coup in Iran overthrew its prime minister and cemented the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

The revelations, and admission, has come in CIA's podcast. The podcast, named 'The Langley Files' has till now released 15 episodes on the Android platform at least.

The “CIA’s leadership is committed to being as open with the public as possible,” the agency said in a statement, as quoted by The Associated Press. “The agency’s podcast is part of that effort — and we knew that if we wanted to tell this incredible story, it was important to be transparent about the historical context surrounding these events, and CIA’s role in it.”

Iran's mission to the United Nations was less positive in its remarks. According to AP, the mission described 1953 coup as marking “the inception of relentless American meddling in Iran’s internal affairs”. It also dismissed the US acknowledgments.

“The US admission never translated into compensatory action or a genuine commitment to refrain from future interference, nor did it change its subversive policy towards the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the mission said in a statement, according to AP.

The podcast has devoted two episodes to the 'Argo' operation that involved escape of six American diplomats from an extremely hostile Iran.

In the 2012 film 'Argo', Ben Affleck played the late CIA officer Antonio “Tony” Mendez. &nbsp;The podcast for the first time identified the second CIA officer who accompanied Mendez, naming him as agency linguist and exfiltration specialist Ed Johnson. He previously only had been known publicly by the pseudonym “Julio.”

“Working with the six — these are rookies,” Johnson recounts in an interview aired by the podcast. “They were people who were not trained to lie to authorities. They weren’t trained to be clandestine, elusive.”

But in the podcast aired about a month before Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel last Saturday, another brief exchange focuses on the 1953 coup in Iran.

CIA spokesman and podcast host Walter Trosin cites claims of agency historians that majority of CIA's secret operations "bolstered" popularly elected governments.

“We should acknowledge, though, that this is, therefore, a really significant exception to that rule,” Trosin says of the 1953 coup.

CIA historian Brent Geary, appearing on the podcast, agrees.

“This is one of the exceptions to that,” Geary says.

While recounting ‘Argo’ rescue from Iran, CIA calls 1953 coup undemocratic

The CIA has unveiled the name of the second officer who played a significant role in the 1980 rescue mission of six American diplomats from Iran that inspired the 2012 Oscar-winning film 'Argo'.

Ed Johnson, who is also unofficially known as the 'Canadian Caper,' helped smuggle the diplomats out of Iran disguised as a Canadian film crew.

With his help, two CIA officers and the six diplomats were able to board their flight to Zurich.

His name was revealed on Thursday (September 14), in an episode of the intelligence agency's podcast, The Langley Files.

Even though the CIA always acknowledged that a second officer was extremely important for the operation, his identity was hidden as Johnson did not want to seek public recognition for his role, according to the New York Times.

"He was someone who spent his whole life doing things quietly and in the shadows, without any expectation of praise or public recognition," Walter Trosin, a CIA spokesman and co-host of the agency's podcast, told the Times.

"And he was very much happy to keep it that way. But it was his family that encouraged him, later in life, to tell his side of the story because they felt there would be value to the world in hearing it."

As per reports, Johnson, who is now 80 years old, is suffering from medical issues that prevented him from appearing on the podcast.

<h2>The daring rescue mission</h2>

Canada and the United States joined hands to make the brazen rescue operation a success. Both countries devised a plan to smuggle the diplomats out of the Iranian capital, Tehran on authentic-looking Canadian passports with fabricated Iranian visas demonstrating that they had been in Iran for just a few days.

The diplomats pretended to be a Hollywood crew who had been looking for perfect locations to shoot their science fiction film 'Argo'. They were successful in walking freely through Iranian customs and boarded their plane to Switzerland in January 1980.

The story of this mission was retold in the movie 'Argo' which was released in the year 2012, featuring actor Ben Affleck who played the role of CIA operative Mendez. &nbsp;

Arkin was last seen in The Kominsky Method on Netflix which co-starred Michael Douglas. The project fetched him Emmy nominations in 2019 and 2020, and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in 2020 and 2021.&nbsp; 
 
The actor won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his 14 minutes appearance in the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine.&nbsp; 
 
Arkin's memorable role in the 2012 Ben Affleck-directed political drama Argo earned him his fourth Oscar nomination. He played veteran producer Lester Siegel, whose sharp sense of humour and biting line delivery won over audiences. 
 
His son, Adam Arkin, 66, is also a well-known actor and director who has starred in TV hits including Chicago Hope, 8 Simple Rules and Sons of Anarchy. 
 
Born in Brooklyn, New York in March 1934, Alan Arkin moved to Los Angeles with his family in his childhood. The actor attended several different colleges and dropped out of at least three, including Bennington College in Vermont, which lists him as an alumnus of the class of 1955. 
 
In his initial years after college,&nbsp;he dabbled in a career in music briefly with a folk group called the Tarriers, where he sang and played guitar. The short-lived group produced the hit top-5 single 'The Banana Boat Song' in 1957. 
 
But Arkin, who had taken acting lessons since childhood, soon quit the band and set about trying to establish himself as an actor.&nbsp;In Chicago, he became an early member of the Second City improvisational comedy troupe.&nbsp; 
 
He eventually made his debut in Broadway in 1961 in From the Second City and followed it up with a Tony-winning performance in 1963's Enter Laughing. 
 
More television and film roles followed in the subsequent years and soon started doing films, He received his first of four career Oscar nominations in 1967 for his role in the comedy The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.
