A woman in Malaysia was left bloodied and traumatised after a gang of otters savaged her while she was on her routine jog. The&nbsp;victim was jogging through&nbsp;Tanjung Aru Recreation Park in Sabah when she was ambushed by at least eight 'not-so-cute' otters.&nbsp;

Mariasella Harun (40) said she tried to fight off the animals for at least five to 10 minutes before other joggers came to her aid. However, she had been badly battered and bruised by the little creatures till then.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harun said the otters came at her in a pack after jumping out of a drain in the park around 6 am local time.&nbsp;

“Suddenly, I saw something emerging from the drain next to KGC. At first, I thought it was a cart, but the creature jumped out and bit me while I was running, and there were many of them," Harun was quoted as saying by MalayMail.&nbsp;

<h2>Family of otters spotted routinely&nbsp;</h2>

According to authorities, a family of otters, comprising six adults and two cubs, has frequently been spotted in the park where they hunt for fish in the lake.&nbsp;

The wildlife department said although otter sightings are common, it was the first instance when a human was attacked by these animals.&nbsp;

“We received reports of the incident and were informed that the otters had entered through a damaged part of the gate, which has now been repaired,” Roland Niun, director of the Sabah Wildlife Department said.&nbsp;

Niun said otters typically visited the park in the morning and evenings and left the area quickly, which is popular among joggers.&nbsp;

“They inhabit the surrounding areas with abundant water sources—swamps, drains, and ditches,” he added.

Despite their cute and cuddly features, otters have teeth and jaws that can easily crack open a shellfish. They can weigh up to 14kg and grow up to four feet, including their tail.&nbsp;

The adoption of otters as household pets has been a growing trend in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The man, as per reports, was&nbsp;attempting to photograph two newborn moose calves, when he was attacked by the mother moose, revealed authorities on&nbsp;Monday (May 21). The victim has been identified as Dale Chorman, a resident of&nbsp;Homer.

<h2>A mother protecting her young</h2>

According to Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the incident took place in Homer, where the female moose had recently given birth.&nbsp;

Chorman and another man were looking for the moose.&nbsp;The second man escaped the attack uninjured and has not been identified, reported news agency AP.

"As they were walking through the brush looking for the moose, that's when the cow moose attacked Dale," McDaniel explained.&nbsp;

The exact manner of the attack, whether by kicking, stomping, or both, remains unclear as no one has witnessed the tragic event. Chorman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the moose left the area, Alaska State Troopers said in an online post.

<h2>Do not disturb a mother moose, warn authorities</h2>

Historically, such attacks, although rare, are not uncommon. In 1995, a moose stomped a 71-year-old man to death on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. The agitated animal, as per witnesses, was subjected to hours of&nbsp;harassment&nbsp;by students, and had then attacked the man who was trying to enter the building.

Alaska is home to an around 200,000 moose, while the&nbsp;human population stands around&nbsp; 737,000.

Generally, moose are not aggressive unless provoked. However, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game on it website warns that cow moose are particularly protective of their young and may attack if humans approach too closely.

"Calving season for moose is the time when you definitely want to give them extra space," McDaniel also emphasised.

"Cow moose with calves are going to be some of the more aggressive moose you're going to come in contact with," he said.

He advised people to avoid startling the animals or getting between a mother and her calves.

"Those moose will become unpredictable and work to protect their calves at any cost," he added.

Moose, the largest members of the deer family, can be quite formidable. Even a small adult female can weigh over 350 kg, while a large adult male can weigh up to twice that. They can stand nearly 1.8 metres tall. Given their size and protective nature, encounters with moose, especially during calving season, can be dangerous.
