<p>Google issued a warning over Android phones stating that smartphones will become more expensive in India because of the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) latest ruling. It is said that the costs might increase for app developers, equipment makers, and eventually consumers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Google also mentioned that the new antitrust order to change how the company markets its Android platform might also pose security threats to users besides driving up costs. The magnitude of any change in costs will be more comprehensive as Google powers 97 per cent of smartphones in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes after CCI imposed a fine of $161 million on Google in October last year for exploiting its dominant position in Android. The company was also fined for abusing its power through Play Store.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It had also asked the tech giant to change restrictions imposed on smartphone makers related to pre-installing apps as the tech company licenses its Android system to smartphone makers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Experts argued that Google's imposition of restrictions is anti-competitive, for example, mandatory pre-installation of its apps. On the other hand, the company say that such agreements help keep Android free.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The issue reached the Indian court when Google India approached the Supreme Court. It challenged the order passed by National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by the news agency Reuters, Google's filing, which is not public, read: "Tremendous advancement in growth of an ecosystem of device manufacturers, app developers and users is at the verge of coming to a halt because of the remedial directions."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Google will be required to make far-reaching changes to the Android mobile platform which has been in place for the last 14-15 years," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>'Google is refusing to pay fines'</strong></h2>

<p>During the court hearing on Monday (January 16), CCI's counsel Mukul Rohatgi alleged that Google is not willing to pay. But in the same case, it had paid a fine in the European court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The CCI lawyers said, "Their (Google) grievance that they cannot pay the fine is false as they have in 2017 paid over 4 billion euros in an EU case. The EU court has also considered them as abusing dominant position. Here in India because it's a third-world country they are not paying."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Next, the court will hear the same matter on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

Schiller further said that he isn&rsquo;t surprised that other companies are attempting to replicate the feature, &ldquo;Because when we do things really good, others like to copy us.&rdquo;</p>

<p>&ldquo;They don&rsquo;t work in all the ways we need Face ID to work,&rdquo; Schiller said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re very aware that through the years the simple thing, this home button, that started as the way you click to get to the Home screen, grew into doing so many things for us. <p>He added, &ldquo;So for Face ID we needed the best way we know of to enable us to easily unlock our device with our face, in a protected way with the Secure Enclave, and support all these other things. We had to solve all of that. Other things that people have tried with face haven&rsquo;t been anything like that. Face ID is a very unique implementation.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Since the unveiling of the Apple iPhone X and the Face ID feature, a bunch of smartphone companies have tried to replicate it. The likes of Samsung and Xiaomi have opted for iris scanners as an added layer of security. OnePlus though has included a feature on the OnePlus 5T that is very similar to Face ID. That&rsquo;s not all either. Even Huawei&rsquo;s sub-brand Honor has adopted the feature for its premium View10 smartphone. The Chinese company claims that its feature is more accurate and seamless. It also recently showcased its Animoji feature that is clearly more advanced than Apple&rsquo;s.</p>

<p>Apart from its uniqueness, Apple&rsquo;s Face ID feature was also in the news because of apparent privacy concerns. But Schiller said that no third-party developer has access to the Face ID data. He also reiterated that Face ID is much more secure than Touch ID. During the launch event, Apple had said that hackers had one in 50,000 chance to hack Touch ID, but one in a million to hack Face ID. That being said, YouTube is being flooded with videos of people managing to fool Face ID by using masks.</p>

Besides, LG is also giving G6 customers free 100GB of 4G data from Reliance Jio till March 2018.</p>

<p>LG&rsquo;s new premium phone is said to have been &ldquo;designed in response to consumer feedback and user opinions&rdquo;.&nbsp; According to the company, the G6 has a focus on the features consumers want, most notably a big screen that actually fits in one hand.</p>

<p>The LG G6 comes with a 5.7-inch QHD+ display with a resolution of 2,880 x1,440 pixels. It has an 18:9 screen aspect ratio, which is claimed to be the first-ever in a smartphone. Compared to conventional 16:9 aspect ratio displays, the 18:9 format offers more viewing space. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The game, which marries a classic 20-year old franchise with augmented reality, allows players to walk around real-life neighbourhoods while seeking virtual Pokemon game characters on their smartphone screens - a scavenger hunt that has earned enthusiastic early reviews.</p>

<p>In the United States, by July 8 - two days after its release - it was installed on more than 5 per cent of Android devices in the country, according to web analytics firm SimilarWeb.</p>

<p>It is now on more Android phones than dating app Tinder and its rate of daily active users was neck and neck with social network Twitter, the analytics firm said. The game is also being played an average of 43 minutes a day, more time spent than on WhatsApp or Instagram, it added.</p>

<p>As the game took the US&nbsp;by storm, Nintendo&#39;s shares surged by a quarter in value today&nbsp;to their highest level since November. They have gained 36 per cent since Thursday&#39;s close with the initial momemtum coming from the game shooting to the top of free app rankings in Apple Inc&#39;s US&nbsp;iTunes store.</p>

<p>The game has been released in the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Launches for other countries including Japan - one of the world&#39;s biggest gaming markets - are due soon.</p>

<p>Pokemon GO may not prove an immediate boost to Nintendo&#39;s bottom line: it is free and Nintendo is not the sole investor or creator.</p>

<p>Some analysts have been upbeat about the money-making potential for Pokemon GO, largely from small purchases made while playing - and the positive signs for other mobile gaming launches planned by Nintendo for 2016 and 2017.</p>

<p>&quot;If nothing else, Pok?mon GO has shown that there are &#39;dormant&#39; Nintendo fans eager to trial its content for smartphones,&quot; Deutsche Bank analysts said in a note.</p>

<p>But others cautioned that there were still large question marks over whether Pokemon GO will be able to generate the kind of sustained excitement that would significantly boost Nintendo&#39;s earnings - particularly given that the company now has to contend with a sharp strengthening in the yen.</p>

<p>Real change, those investors say, would have to come from the core console business.</p>

Pokemon GO may not prove an immediate boost to Nintendo's bottom line: it is free and Nintendo is not the sole investor or creator. The game itself was created by Niantic, spun off from Google last year, and Pokemon Company. Nintendo owns a third of Pokemon Company and both have undisclosed stakes in Niantic, which had already developed a similar augmented reality, multi-player game in 2012. Some analysts have been upbeat about the money-making potential for Pokemon GO, largely from small purchases made while playing - and the positive signs for other mobile gaming launches planned by Nintendo for 2016 and 2017. "If nothing else, Pok?mon GO has shown that there are 'dormant' Nintendo fans eager to trial its content for smartphones," Deutsche Bank analysts said in a note. But others cautioned that there were still large question marks over whether Pokemon GO will be able to generate the kind of sustained excitement that would significantly boost Nintendo's earnings - particularly given that the company now has to contend with a sharp strengthening in the yen. Real change, those investors say, would have to come from the core console business. "Now if we were talking about its next generation console becoming the core platform for gamers, then that would be something to get excited about - but at the moment, this alone is not enough," said Yoshihiro Okumura, general manager at Chibagin Asset Management.
