The US State Department on Friday pressed the military regime in Myanmar for the immediate release of American journalist Daniel Fenster&nbsp;detained in Myanmar.

The State Department said that consular officers from the US&nbsp;embassy in Yangon had sought to visit Daniel Fenster who was working as managing editor for Frontier Myanmar.

"We are deeply concerned over the detention, "We have pressed the military regime to release him immediately and will continue to do so until he is allowed to return home safely to his family," the State Department said.

Fenster was reportedly detained at the international airport in Yangon. The newspaper said it didn't have information on why the American journalist was detained.

"We are concerned for his wellbeing and call for his immediate release. Our priorities now are to make sure he is safe and provide him with whatever assistance he needs," Frontier Myanmar said.

Fenster, 37, was reportedly trying to return to America when he was detained.

"We urge the Burmese regime to grant consular access, as required by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, without delay, and to ensure proper treatment of Daniel while he remains detained," it added.&nbsp;

The Myanmar military has cracked down hard on protesters ever since the coup on February 1 and detained several political leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi.

Several people have been killed in protests and many arrested by the military junta. Several nations including the US and EU have imposed sanctions on Myanmar.

An American journalist, along with a local reported were arrested by the police in Burundi on Sunday for alleged destruction of criminal evidence.&nbsp;

Julia Steers, a fellow with the International Women&#39;s Media Foundation, and Gildas Yihundimpundu were arrested in the Mutakura district north of the capital Bujumbura, police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye wrote on his Twitter account.

The media regulator and the police had questioned both for &quot;attempting to destroy evidence of crimes committed by protesters&quot;, before releasing Steers from custody. Her colleague was still being interrogated and her driver has also been detained.&nbsp;

Police said the journalist had subsequently been released and handed to the US embassy, but her fixer remained under custody for further investigation.

Such arrests are not uncommon in the region, that has been marred by protests since last year when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced plans to run for a third term in office in April 2015.

The authourities had launched a crackdown on the media, accusing the press of being part of a &quot;conspiracy&quot; to overthrow it.&nbsp;

The pair was the latest in a long line of journalists arrested by Burundi authorities. They have constantly silenced journalists at home and also lashed out at the international media.&nbsp;

Burundi briefly arrested British and French journalists earlier this year, while other foreign journalists were expelled prior to that.

The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) estimates 100 journalists have been forced into exile since the violence erupted in the country.&nbsp;
