American Grant Holloway successfully defended his 110 metres hurdles world title on Sunday after Jamaica`s Olympic champion Hansle Parchment injured himself in the warmup and world leader Devon Allen was disqualified for a false start. Tokyo silver medallist Holloway opened up a lead from the 10m mark and came home in 13.03 seconds, ahead of compatriot Trey Cunningham and Spain`s Asier Martinez.

"At the start, it was just me, my lane and my space and I was ready for whatever happens," said Holloway.
"We have to continue the hard work and we will see what happens next. It feels good to win in front of the home crowd." It was the United States` second track gold in Eugene, Oregon, a day after Fred Kerley led an American sweep 100 metres.

Cunningham said he was disappointed at not finishing higher on the podium in his worlds debut, after picking up the collegiate title at the springy and speedy Hayward Field track last month. "We came for even a shinier medal. I don`t like to settle, but it`s the world championships, and everyone brings their best," said Cunningham, adding that he had struggled on the sixth hurdle before regaining his poise. "I stayed composed and in my lane and did what I needed to do."

American Allen, who signed as a wide receiver with the NFL`s Philadelphia Eagles earlier this year, had produced the third-fastest time in the event in June but left the blocks one thousandth of a second early.
He made numerous appeals to officials but was rebuffed, prompting a chorus of boos from the home crowd as he was removed from the track.

"I`ll learn from it and not react as fast next time," he said. Martinez was overjoyed after producing a personal best (13.17) to collect Spain`s second consecutive bronze in the event. "This is a dream and I am having a hard time to wake up from it," he said. "We are becoming a leading sport in Spain and results back this up."

The United States has relaxed most of the Covid-19 restrictions in many parts for a long time. But since then, the Covid-19 cases have also started to increase.

It is feared that the US is moving towards its second-largest wave, which may have already begun.

The country reported a huge number of cases while the pandemic was at its peak and was also one of the worst affected countries, with a large number of deaths being reported due to the infection.

In a matter of weeks, the BA.5 version of Covid-19 has become the predominant variant of the virus in the country.

The BA.5 variant accounted for nearly 54 percent of Covid-19 cases in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The BA.4 variant accounted for 17% of the total.

The variants have also been shown to evade protection from vaccination and previous infections.

Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, commemorating the end of the legal enslavement of Black Americans, took place Saturday in Galveston, Texas, the Gulf Coast city where Juneteenth originated.

Historians say on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Union Major General Gordon Granger and his men informed enslaved Americans they were free from slavery after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln more than two years earlier, on Jan. 1, 1863.

During Saturday’s event at the Ashton Villa, the former headquarters for the Confederate Army in Galveston, speakers praised the efforts of former State Representative Al Edwards, a Houston legislator who helped make Juneteenth a statewide holiday in 1980.

Douglas Matthews, the event’s master of ceremony and Galveston Juneteenth Celebration coordinator, laid out some history in his opening remarks.

“Freedom is a cherished word to all humanity – particularly to those in bondage. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued his promised Emancipation Proclamation. But it took 30 months for President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the enforcement thereof to reach the South. Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with 2,000 troops on June 18, 1865 – two and a half years later – to announce and enforce the freeing of Black slaves. And this was the birth of Juneteenth," Matthews said.

Alana Holloway Edwards, the daughter of the late State Rep. Edwards and a school principal, said promoting her father’s legacy is based on education and awareness of Juneteenth.

“My father, late and former State Representative Al Edwards, was majorly focused on makingJuneteenth not only a state holiday, but also a national holiday, and bringing awareness to the fact that Union Army General Gordon Granger came to Galveston to free the 250,000 slaves that were left still in Texas even two years after the Emancipation Proclamation,” Holloway Edwards said. “And so today, we celebrate here at Ashton Villa because that day is significant and everyone deserves to know the truth about the history that happened right here in Galveston in Texas.”

In June 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed and sent to President Joe Biden a bill making June 19, or "Juneteenth," a federal holiday. Biden signed the bill into law on June 17, 2021.

Commemorating end of legal slavery of Black Americans with Juneteenth

The Iowa state Supreme Court overruled a 2018 judgement that stated that Iowans have a constitutional right to abortion. June 17's decision, combined with the possibility of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that established a countrywide right to abortion, would give Iowa politicians far more leeway in passing and enforcing draconian abortion restrictions.

In a challenge to a 2020 legislation providing a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion, the Iowa Supreme Court issued a split judgement. On Friday, it remained unclear whether the judgement meant that the law, which had been blocked by a district judge, would go into effect. Representatives from Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, which filed a lawsuit against the law, said they are working on the assumption that it does.

The court's prior finding recognising a constitutional right to abortion "insufficiently recognises that future human lives are at stake," according to the majority opinion. It remanded the case to a lower court for further review.

In their lawsuit against the waiting period, Planned Parenthood said that the law's enactment had broken procedural norms and placed an unlawful barrier on women seeking abortions.

While the court on Friday rejected the finding of a state constitutional right to abortion, it did not specify what the new criteria should be.

US President Joe Biden heads Wednesday to a Latin America summit on a mission to woo back the region as his administration pushed out pledges, including a plan to train half a million health workers.

The long-awaited Summit of the Americas was marred by a boycott from Mexico's president, who was upset that Biden did not invite the leftist leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela on the grounds that they did not meet democratic standards.

The Biden administration insisted there were no hard feelings and moved forward on initiatives aimed at cementing ties across Latin America, where a rising China has increasingly made inroads despite the historic US influence.

Hours before Biden was to arrive, his administration announced a new Americas Health Corps that will aim to improve the skills of 500,000 health workers across the region, building on the lessons from Covid-19, which hit the Western Hemisphere especially hard.

The health training will cost $100 million, although the United States will not contribute all of it and will seek to raise funds, including through the Pan American Health Organization.

The pandemic "showed us the many cracks in our global health systems and underscored the importance of strong and resilient health systems for the entire population," a White House statement said.

China has stepped up its role in Latin America since the pandemic started, moving early to supply vaccines.

Cuba has also long exported its state-employed doctors, a practice that so infuriated the previous administration of Donald Trump that he suspended funding for the Pan American Health Organization over alleged ties.

The health announcement comes a day after Vice President Kamala Harris detailed another $1.9 billion in commitments by businesses to invest in impoverished and violence-ravaged El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

The troubles in the so-called Northern Triangle, as well as Haiti, have generated a soaring number of migrants to the United States, setting off a domestic furor as Trump's Republican Party demands efforts to stop them.

"We know the American people will benefit from stable and prosperous neighbors. And when we provide economic opportunity for people in Central America, we address an important driver of migration," Harris said.

'Nearshoring'

Mauricio Claver-Carone, the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), said that Latin America can increasingly be seen as a "sea of peace" for investors amid the global turbulence from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and rising risks associated with manufacturing juggernaut China.

The head of the IADB, which provides development funding in Latin America, said he saw a rise of "nearshoring," with businesses moving closer to markets rather than in China.

Since the first Summit of the Americas in 1994, "each dollar that went to China was one dollar, one investment, one job less for Latin America and the Caribbean," he told AFP in an interview in Los Angeles.

In Latin America, "whether they are governments of the left or the right, they all want foreign investment, they all want nearshoring, they all want economic growth," he said.

The first summit, held in Miami by Bill Clinton, aimed to create a vast free-trade zone that would span the hemisphere other than communist Cuba.

Biden is holding only the second Summit of the Americas on US soil at a time that the political appetite for free trade has waned in Washington, with Trump rising to power in part by attacking trade liberalization as hurting workers.

But Biden has stood firm on another core principle of the Summit of the Americas -- democracy -- even as he considers going next month to Saudi Arabia, a critical oil supplier.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador insisted that all nations of the hemisphere should be included, a stance backed by several other regional leaders who nonetheless agreed to come.

Biden is separately expected to meet President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, Latin America's most populous nation, despite rising fears that the Trump ally will not accept the legitimacy of upcoming elections.
