Days after President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency in the Maldives, Joint Opposition spokesperson Ahmed Mahloof on Wednesday said that officials within the government are threatening the Member of Parliament (MPs) of the opposition party.

Mahloof said in a statement that &quot;We are very worried that MPs are getting lots of threats, especially from officials within government. According to the constitution, we should be given security round the clock.&quot;

&quot;But it&#39;s been more than a year Yameen stopped that. Some members of the gangs are also threatening MPs, so we are deeply concerned because there were sad incidents of MPs being stabbed to death and paralyzed too. Lot of MPs were attacked even recently,&quot; he added.

Maldivian journalist Junayd took to Twitter to inform about the threat calls to Mahloof.

&quot;A coordinator [political post] at the tourism ministry has called MP @AhmedMahloof and threatened to kill him, Mahloof has said. #MaldivesInCrisis #MaldivesCrisis,&quot; he tweeted.

Earlier today, the opposition called for other countries to intervene in the crisis.

Ali Zahir, deputy leader of Adhaalath Party (AP), demanded an immediate intervention to resolve the turmoil as the situation continues to worsen after the arrest of top judges and politicians.

Zahir told ANI, &quot;This is the time for other countries to help us. I wonder what the international community is waiting for to happen. Do they want to help us only after we become another Syria?&quot;

Citing concerns, he added, &quot;President Yameen first hijacked and dysfunctioned the parliament and now he has done the same with the judiciary.&quot;

There has been worldwide condemnation of the government&#39;s move, with the United States also expressed concern.

Maldives crisis: Opposition MPs receiving death threats

Maldives capital Male continues to remain tense, with the opposition and general public unrelentingly asking President Yameen to step down and allow a new leadership to take charge.

The opposition, media and others have confirmed that there is a heavy army and police presence at all key locations, including the Parliament and the Supreme Court, and that judges continue to remain in fear about their safety as long as President Yameen stays in office.

Rumours abound that the army and paramilitary forces could enter the Supreme Court premises during the course of the day and take the judges into their custody on the orders of the president.

In his defense, President Yameen had written letters to Chief Justice asking him to revoke his orders. The government has reportedly received information that the Supreme Court may issue orders to arrest President Yameen soon.

The people of Maldives, including the opposition leadership, are insisting that President Yameen resigns for not following the apex court&#39;s orders. They feel he is corrupt, perpetrating misrule and is guilty of committing human rights abuses. Yameen, however, has denied these charges.

The President denies the allegations.

Two Members of Parliament Abdullah Sinan and Ahmed Ilham were detained on Sunday, produced before a criminal court on Monday, and thereafter released.

The duo were among the dozen former government lawmakers disqualified by the country&#39;s electoral watchdog over the Supreme Court&#39;s anti-defection ruling.

The reinstatement of the disqualified Members of Parliament, if achieved, would allow the opposition to claim that it is in the majority, and therefore, have the right to form the government post President Yameen&#39;s exit from office.
