The death toll in Bihar due to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/acute-encephalitis-syndrome-advanced-life-support-ambulances-pressed-into-service-in-bihar-229038">Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES)</a> has risen to 136 affecting children across 16 districts.

According to statistics released by the department, the total number of AES cases registered across the state since June 1 was 626, and the total number of deaths caused by the same has mounted to 136.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has issued instructions for deployment of eight advanced life-support (ALS) ambulances in the affected districts.

The government has also announced that it would reimburse any expenses involved in getting children treated at private hospitals and nursing homes or hiring of ambulances.

Accordingly, eight additional ALS ambulances were pressed into service for the transportation of critical patients under the National Health Mission (NHM), a statement issued by the health ministry said.

To accommodate the rising number of encephalitis patients, Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur has converted prisoners' ward into an ICU.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea next Monday, seeking a direction to the Centre to urgently constitute a team of medical experts for the treatment of the children in Muzaffarpur.
