At the ADMM Plus meeting, the Indian Defence Minister is also expected to meet his counterparts from other countries, including Malaysia and Laos. The last meeting between Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Chinese counterpart was in April 2023 in India. At that time, the then-Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu had travelled to Delhi for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO Defence Minister meeting. The meeting was significant, especially in the visual domain, since no handshake happened between the two ministers. While the border issue dominated the meeting, the fact that Minister Rajnath chose to do a namaste, instead of a handshake with his Chinese counterpart, showed that the ties remained frosty that time.&nbsp;

Before the 2023 meeting, Minister Rajnath Singh and the then Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe met on the sidelines of the SCO meet in Russia's Moscow in 2020, just months after the Galwan incident. Back-to-back ministerial meetings are seen as a positive element in ties, just a month after the Kazan meeting in October at the leaders' level. The October meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit was the first bilateral meeting between Indian and Chinese leaders since the Galwan incident, which led to the downfall of the ties between the two Asian giants. Following the clashes, India had banned a number of Chinese apps and increased scrutiny on Chinese investments.&nbsp;

Indian External affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar, and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met on Monday in Brazil on the sidelines of the G20 summit. During the meeting, it was decided that both countries will take the next steps in ties, which include the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage, data sharing on trans-border rivers, direct flights between India and China and media exchanges.

The ADMM-Plus meeting will witness the participation of defence ministers from ASEAN member countries and eight other nations. The ministers would gather and discuss the way forward for security cooperation in this meeting. 
 
Prior to this, Singh also had a fruitful discussion with Esper over boosting defence cooperation between India and the US as well as the opportunities and challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

"Security can only be successful if it is sustainable," the minister stressed. 
 
Later today, Singh will also inaugurate the India pavilion at the Defence and Security Exhibition in Bangkok. He will address the business seminar and interact with the industry representatives. 
 
As part of the agenda for the ADMM Plus meeting, Singh will also release the Handbook on Military Medicine for ASEAN along with the Defence Minister of Myanmar. 
 
A courtesy call with&nbsp;the Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha will also take place during the visit.

The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a bilateral meeting with the United States Secretary of Defence, Mark Esper on the sidelines of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus) on Sunday.

Singh, who arrived in Bangkok on Friday with a delegation, was received by Air Chief marshal Chewchan Ruddit, Special Advisor to the office of the Permanent Secretary for Defense, MoD Thailand.

"The defence cooperation between ASEAN and India has its own importance. I want to appreciate Thailand for hosting and chairing this summit. I am sure that we will be having a very fruitful discussion and it will be beneficial for all the ASEAN member countries", Singh said in Bangkok.

Additionally, he expressed the desire to talk about sustainable security.&nbsp; 
 
"Security can only be successful if it is sustainable," the minister added.

The delegation also plans to address concerns regarding terrorism, disaster management, and coastal security. According to Singh, cooperation with ASEAN is key to the success of India's Act East policy.

"The summit will also help in building strategic trust between the leaders of the Asia Pacific through proper communication. Also, cooperation between the militaries of the ASEAN member countries will be strengthened," Singh added.

Besides attending bilateral meetings, Singh is expected to inaugurate the India pavilion at the Defence and Security Exhibition in Bangkok, where he will also address the business seminar and interact with industry representatives.&nbsp;

ADMM Plus' key agenda includes unveiling the Handbook on Military Medicine for ASEAN, which will be released by Singh alongside the Defence Minister of Myanmar.
