Social media and news websites are abuzz with the Aarey forest, again. The last time, the forest was in news, it was 2019 when the then Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had relocated the proposed Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro Line 3 depot in the area to Kanjurmarg, east of Aarey, a day after assuming power.

A local court on Saturday sent 29 people to judicial custody for five days while police detained 55 others in connection with protests against the cutting of trees in Aarey colony area.

Twenty-nine people have been arrested since Friday night and Section 144 imposed was imposed by Mumbai Police at the Aarey Colony blocking all roads to it after protesters gathered to fight the Bombay High Court orders that allowed authorities to cut down over 2,500 trees for a Metro project.
