While it still remains compulsory to link your 12-digit Aadhaar number to bank accounts, PAN cards, government services and cell phone services, an interim relief comes through as the central government on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that it was willing to extend this year's deadline from December 31, 2017, to March 31, 2018.

The Supreme Court is now scheduled to hear the Aadhaar card case next week. Attorney General K K Venugopal informed a bench headed by Cheif Justice Dipak Misra that the Centre was willing to extend the deadline.

On October 25 this year, the Supreme court had said that the deadline for compulsory linking of Aadhaar to receive benefits of government schemes has been extended till March 31, 2018, for those who do not have the 12-digit unique biometric identification number. Senior Supreme Court lawyer Shyam Divan had mentioned before the top court about the expiration of the deadline this month and that the petitioners should be granted an interim relief in the form of an extended deadline.

The deadline for linking Aadhaar to cellphone numbers remains the same -- that is on February 6, 2018.

Although the deadline has been extended, it is important for users to be informed about the entities that must be linked to their Aadhaar before the deadline expires; these would include cell phone numbers, UAN number, PAN, insurance policies, ration card and bank account.
