Shocking scenes emerged during Melbourne City's A-League match with Melbourne Victory&nbsp;on Saturday night when a player was assaulted by a pitch invader. During the 20th minute of the match, a deluge of fans from both sides invaded the AAMP Parl pitch with players attempting to seek cover.&nbsp;

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms which shows a pitch invader running towards City goalkeeper Thomas Glover and smashing a bin with full force on his face.&nbsp;

24-year-old Glover was left bloodied as blood trickled down from his face while he was taken off the turf. The match was suspended initially before being abandoned.

“The Isuzu UTE A-League Men fixture between Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park has been abandoned as a result of the pitch invasion by Melbourne Victory fans, and the subsequent injuries to Melbourne City FC goalkeeper Tom Glover and the match official Alex King,” read a statement released by the Australian Professional League (APL).&nbsp;

Melbourne City FC took to its official Twitter account and gave an update about Glover's health stating: "Tom Glover is receiving medical treatment in the dressing room and likely has a concussion."

Match referee Alex King who was beside Glover when the attack took place also sustained a cut to the eyebrow.&nbsp;

The videos of the incident showed hundreds of fans descending upon&nbsp;the pitch with flares being sprayed across the stadium. Others climbed on the goalframe and caused structural damage to it. The players, meanwhile were forced to enter the tunnel as a safety measure.&nbsp;

Football Australia (FA) condemned the action of the fans and said strict action will be taken soon.&nbsp;

"Such behaviour has no place in Australian Football, with a full Football Australia investigation to commence immediately, where strong sanctions will be handed down."

Notably, fans of both sides had planned a walkout at the 20-minute mark after APL decided to sell the A-League Grand Final rights to Sydney for the next three years.

Head coach Steve Corica is confident Sydney FC`s foreign strike force can give the defending champions a boost when action in the A-League continues through the up-coming international window. 
 
Australia`s national team, the Socceroos, will play four World Cup qualifiers in Kuwait from June 3 to June 15, with coach Graham Arnold expected to name his squad for the trip to the Middle East on May 25. 
 
A-League matches are scheduled to continue following the squad`s departure for Kuwait, and Sydney are expected to be among clubs affected by the call-ups. 
 
But with Englishman Adam Le Fondre recently returning after a spell with Mumbai City to join Brazilian Bobo and New Zealander Kosta Barbarouses, Corica is hoping his side`s inconsistency up front can be overcome. 
 
"That`s a very positive sign, that we`ll keep all the attacking players, which is good because that`s one area where we`ve probably lacked this year," said Corica.

Top A-League clubs have expressed interest in signing departing Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta for the next season, Football Federation Australia (FFA) chief executive David Gallop has said.

The 33-year-old midfielder announced last month that he would leave Spanish champions Barcelona at the end of the season after 16 trophy-filled years at Camp Nou.

The Spain international was linked to Chinese side Chongqing Dangdai Lifan but no deal has materialised and media reports now speculate the midfielder might head to Japan or the United States.

J-League side Vissel Kobe`s head of player development Atsuhiro Miura, however, has denied that Iniesta had agreed to join the Japanese team owned by Barcelona`s sponsor Rakuten, leaving room for Australian clubs to make a move.

"I won`t name who but I do understand that A-League clubs have expressed interest, and that`s a start," Gallop said on Thursday.

"He`ll have offers from around the globe but the A-League offers a great competition to play in and the Australian lifestyle... is an attraction.

"It would require a significant investment, primarily from one of our clubs, but we`ve got some funds available as well and if we can contribute - it would be a contribution, not the bulk of what he could earn - then we think it`s money well spent."

According to Australian media reports, Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers are interested in using the FFA`s A$3 million ($2.24 million) war chest to sign Iniesta.

"I said that I would not go to Europe and apart from that all possibilities are open," Iniesta told beIN Sports after Barcelona`s 5-1 victory over Villarreal on Wednesday.

"You will know when I tell you. There are things to seal, little details and I will try and choose the best option."

Iniesta is expected to play his last two matches for Barcelona in their season-ending La Liga fixtures against Levante and Real Sociedad.
