WTC Final: RR sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal to take Ruturaj Gaikwad's place after impressive IPL 2023 season

Yashasvi Jaiswal has moved one step closer to his first international cap after he was named as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad as a reserve in the World Test Championship (WTC) squad on Sunday. Jaiswal was in great form in the IPL and scored the most runs by an uncapped Indian in the season while Gaikwad won’t be available until June 5 as he will be getting married. While a place in the Playing XI looks hard to come by, Jaiswal will be optimistic about his debut in the WTC final against Australia.

Jaiswal’s impactful IPL 2023

The Rajasthan Royals batter was seen in sensational form in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season and amassed 625 runs in 14 matches. In his 14 innings, he scored five fifties and a hundred against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to make a statement to the selectors. Jaiswal ended with a strike rate of 163.61 while he averaged 48.08. He was also instrumental for RR in the 2022 season where he scored 258 runs in 10 matches.

The 21-year-old is yet to make his debut for India, however, he has brilliant first-class cricket records. He has scored 1845 runs in 15 matches with an average of 80.21. He also has nine hundreds, and two fifties in the domestic circuit.

He had an outstanding 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season. He played five matches and scored 315 runs with one century and five fifties with an average of 45.00. He became the leading run scorer in the Irani Cup as he scored 357 runs with a brilliant 213 and 144 for the Rest of India against Madhya Pradesh.

The India team has left for the WTC final in batches. Virat Kohli has already reached London. India was a WTC finalist in the year 2021 but lost to New Zealand.
