Sunil Chhetri's plea: Social media rules in India's victory over Kenya

Sunil Chhetri had made an impassioned plea to all the Indian fans of football legends Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo in India and urged them to please come to watch the country play against Kenya.

With less than 10 days left for the football World Cup to begin, India's all-time highest goal-getter demanded some love and affection forthe team.

Chhetri’s appeal left people on social media extremely emotional, resulting in a completely packed stadium during India's clash against Kenya.

Thousands of people turned up to support the team in their international match on Monday after earlier matches saw scant attendance.

And Chhetri too did not disappoint the home crowd with two goals in his 100th international appearance as India won their second successive match of the Intercontinental Cup with a 3-0 victory.

As per a report, nearly 9,000 people were in attendance yesterday for the big clash.

Chhetri, who has earlier witnessed limited crowd to support the team, was overwhelmed afterdeafening chants of 'India' boomed from the stands.

Thesupporters even chanted ‘Vande Mataram’ as the teams walked in.

Rain may have cast a wet blanket over Sunil Chhetri’s 100th appearance in Team India’s blue jersey but the skipper made it memorable by scoring two goals.

After the game, the Blue Tigers walked up to the fans and acknowledged their presence, with the captain taking his players for a lap of honour as his proud family savoured the moment from the stands.

Chhetri also took to the Twitter to express his gratitude for the love and support the team received.

After India's thumping victory, several celebrities also wished him for the team's outstanding performance and Chhetri's 100th match.

While tickets were sold out, there were some empty seats in the nearly 10,000 capacity stadium as rains lashed Mumbai and players battled slushy on-field conditions.

The Intercontinental Cup 2018 is a tournament involving four nations- India, Kenya, New Zealand, and Chinese Taipei.The tournament will act as a practice competition for India's AFC Asian Cup campaign and will also help in forming good relations with the other three countries.

Chhetri is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a striker for the Indian national team and is an all-time top goalscorer with 61 goals in 100 appearances.

He started his professional career at the age of 17 when he signed a contract with India’s top club Mohun Bagan in 2002.

But he first got to don the India blues in 2005, when he was picked to play against Pakistan in a friendly match, in Pakistan where he scored his maiden international goal at the age of 20.
