Met Gala, the invitation-only event, famed for its A-list celebrities and haute couture gowns, is a benefit for New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and also marks the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit.

Camp, a theme that embraces humour, exaggeration and liberal interpretation, was inspired by writer Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on 'Camp.''

Trends on the pink carpet included gold lame and sequins, feathers, neon, and oversized sleeves, skirts and trains.

Tennis star Serena Williams stayed true to her style, pairing Nike sneakers with a custom neon yellow dress from Italian fashion brand Versace.

Later in the evening, Williams ditched the dress, to reveal pink hotpants and high heeled boots.

Lewis Hamilton also attended the Met ball.

The British Formula One racer caught the eye in a black suit flaunting a silver zig-zag design and matching trousers.

The ace racer wore bracelets, as well as rings, a nose stud and earrings.

NFL star quarterback Tom Brady also attended the Met Gala.

Lady Gaga opened this year's Met Gala as she was one of the first people to grace the pink carpet.
