Olympic-medallist Saina Nehwal suffered a shocking defeat in the opening round of China Open on Wednesday. China's Cai Yan Yan thrashed ninth-ranked Nehwal in straight sets 21-9, 21-12.
On Monday, India's highest-ranked shuttler PV Sindhu also faced a shocking defeat in the first round. Nehwal, who lost against the 22-ranked player, extended her disappointing run after consecutive early-round exits in France, Denmark, and Korea, among others.
As both top shuttlers are out from the tournament, Satwiksairaj Reddy leads India's hopes as he entered the second round in doubles and mixed doubles in China.
