Paris Olympics 2024: Lakshya Sen goes down to Malaysia's Zii Jia Lee, misses out on bronze

India's Lakshya Sen went down toMalaysia'sZii Jia Lee in the badminton men's singles bronze medal match at the Paris Olympics 2024 edition on Monday (Aug 6). After a defeat against Denmark's Viktor Alexson in the semifinals, on Sunday (Aug 4), many still had high hopes from Lakshya. However, the 22-year-old failed to seize the momentum and lost 21-13, 16-21, 11-21 in the bronze medal match. Although he had a 4-1 head-to-head lead over the Malaysianprior to the game, Lee held his nerves and overcame a bad start to end with bronze.

Just like against Alexson, Lakshya made a fitting start against Lee. The Indian shuttler seemed to have moved past his semifinal defeat and took the opening game 21-13. He didn't give any chance to his opponent and looked destined for success. However, the script changed soon thereafter. Lee revived in style, pushed Lakshya to all corners and showed impressive speed and agility. To add to Lakshya's woes, he picked an elbow injury which further dented his momentum as he eventually went behind in the contest.

Notably, Lakshya -- in his maiden Olympic appearance during Paris 2024 -- missed out on joining an elite group of Indian badminton players with Olympic medals. The list comprises PV Sindhu (two) and Saina Nehwal (one).However, the youngster has shown immense grit and determination throughout his campaign, while competing with some of the best in men's singles (receiving high praise from Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Alexson).The talented shuttler will be determined to make a strong comeback in the 2028 edition, to be held in Los Angeles.

After the defeat in the bronze medal match, Lakshya told Jio Cinema, "I had my chances in the second set. I could’ve definitely done better. Credit to him, he played better. I think I came well prepared for this game. It has been quite a tough week overall. I was ready to give my 100 per cent."

On playing with an injury, he stated, "In between the points, the blood was on the floor. Sometimes, it takes away the momentum. Just having that break in the game."

Lakshya impressed one and all with moments of brilliance againstAlexson in the semifinal clash on Sunday, prompting the Denmark player to laud his young opponent. Post his semifinal win, Alexson said, "Lakshya isan amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very, very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favorites to win the gold."

Thus, a bright future lies ahead of Lakshya despite his missed opportunities in the Paris Games.
