ODI World Cup 2023: India deliver final KNOCKOUT blow to England in Lucknow, win by 100 runs

Rohit Sharma’s Team India delivered the final knockout blow to defending champions England on Sunday (Oct 29) in the ODI World Cup with a resounding 100-run win in Lucknow. On the brink of exit already, England are now officially out of the race for the semifinals of the ODI World Cup, having been bowled out for 129in 34.5overs. The win also sees India return to the top of the league standings with a place in the semifinals all but sealed with three matches to go.

Knowing a defeat would end their semifinal bid, England needed to chase 230 to stay in contention for the slightest chance. However, like the rest of the campaign, England's batting failed to deliver and they were all out for 129. Liam Livingstone was the top scorer with 27 runs for the English side while their star batters like Joe Root (0) and Ben Stokes (0) failed to deliver.

Jonny Bairstow (14) and Dawid Malan (16) gave a 30-run stand for the opening wicket but after their wickets, it was another meteoric collapse for the champions. For India, Mohammed Shami ended with figures of (22/4) from his seven overs. Jasprit Bumrah scalped three wickets while the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja ended with two and one wickets respectively.

Earlier, India were reduced to 40/3 as England bowlers David Willey and Chris Woakes were in top form. Batting first for the first time in the tournament, England were at the top limiting India to 229/9 in their 50 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with 87 runs with Suryakumar Yadav playing a handy 49-run knock to lead India over 200.

The win for India now means England are officially out of the ODI World Cup. The win also put India atop the pile ahead of South Africa with a perfect record in the World Cup with six wins from six matches.India next take on Sri Lanka who are still vying for a place in the semifinal before they take on South Africa in Kolkata. England, on the other hand, take on Australia in Ahmedabad onSaturday (Nov 4) before facing Netherlands and Pakistan in the final run-in.
