Since David Warner’s international retirement, rookie opener Jake Fraser-McGurk was expected to be his replacement in the shorter formats; however, the selectors are not too convinced with him at the moment, with all-rounder Matthew Short pressing his case for a permanent spot at the top. Following his superb outing against England in the first T20I on Wednesday (Sep 11), where he scored 41 off 26 balls, Short cleared his intentions of filling Warner’s shoes in the ODIs and T20Is.
Despite Short missing the Scotland T20Is for the birth of his first child, McGurk failed to deliver at the top, registering 17 dots in 23 balls faced.
The lanky all-rounder, however, admitted knowing about opening with Travis Head a night before the first game against England, which Australia won by 28 runs.
"I only found out last night," Short said after the first T20I.
"Obviously, with Davey Warner out, you sort of know that the spot's opened up. But then Jake Fraser-McGurk has been playing the last few games in Scotland, so you never know where you sit. But I'm glad I sort of took that opportunity tonight and played my role to help the team with a win tonight.
"It's a personal sort of goal of mine. I've been in and out of the side recently over the last 12-18 months. Now Dave is out, I'm really trying to take this opportunity and cement my spot in this side,” he continued.
Although he has batted lower down the order twice in the T20Is, striking at 126.66, Short's strike rate while batting inthe top three has shot up to 186 in the past seven outings, reflecting how well he adapted at the top.
With Head, who is in the form of his life, the pair screams danger for the opposition.
"It's a pretty clear game plan from the coaching staff. Just go out there with freedom and take the positive options. Trav and I sort of go into the games with that mindset,” he said.
Meanwhile, McGurk remains one of Australia’s best bets at the top order, mainly in the shortest format. His numbers in the IPL 2024 for Delhi Capitals, wherein he notched up two 15-ball fifties - quickest for the franchise, is a testament to his unparalleled potential.Former Australia great and DC head coach Ricky Ponting recently admitted on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast that his game still needs refining.
Besides, Australia’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh also threw weight behind McGurk, saying there is no pressure on him to succeed immediately in international cricket.
