'My team was flabbergasted': R Ashwin recalls IPL 2019's infamous run-out incident vs Jos Buttler

R Ashwin created a huge stir with his infamous run-out of Jos Buttler in IPL 2019. Back then, he was leading the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) -- now known as the Punjab Kings (PBKS) -- whereas Buttler was part of the Royals, like he is in present times as well. The incident took place during match 4at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium inJaipur, when Royals were chasing 185.

The controversy happened during the 13th over of the run-chase, when RR were well-placed at 108-1. Buttler walked back for an impressive 44-ball 69 when Ashwin -- bowling his last over -- saw him taking a stride outside the crease to run him out. As a result, the Englishman'sside lost the plot and managed just 170-9, losing by 14 runs after Chris Gayle top-scored with a fine 79 for KXIP.

Ashwin, who now plays for the RR franchise along with Buttler, recalled the entire episode in a recent chat withMichael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist on the Club Prairie podcast. He revealed how his act surprised his own teammates. The wily off-spinner revealed that he had a quick pep talk with his team to ensure them that he would take the blame for the run-out and asked them tofocus on the job at hand – to win.

He stated, "I still remember that after running out Jos at the non-striker end, my team was flabbergasted. They were just looking at one another. I was the captain; they were looking at me. And I just called them into a huddle and said 'You know what... cricket is a game where people are mostly afraid of being uncomfortable. And now, Jos is uncomfortable. He is gone there and is probably bashing me up inside the dressing room. I know now that he won't do it because he is too nice a guy. But I know people are going to be angry. And anger brings about a lot of mental outbreaks. "

Ashwin added, "I told my teammates whatever it is, I will take the media on, handle it because it's my job. But let's now win this game. They were cruising. I do what it takes to win. And for nothing else matters."

Ashwin's run-out triggered a massive debate as many brought forward the Spirit-of-the-gametalks; criticising his mode of dismissal. On the other hand, a section pointed out that batters need to be wary of not moving too far out of the non-striker's creasebeforehand. Since Ashwin's run-out, many bowlers have resorted to this dismissal in the game, despite varied opinions.

At present, Ashwin and Buttler are part of the RR camp. The Indian spinner left Punjab and joined the Delhi Capitals (DC) before being traded to the Royals ahead of the2022 edition.

Sanju Samson-led RR are on the second spot in IPL 2024 following their 12-run win over DC, at home, in match 9 on Thursday (March 28).
