India squad announcement for Australia tour LIVE: The BCCI has announced the white-ball squads for the upcoming tour of Australia where India will be play ODIs and T20Is. The tour is set to start right after ongoing two-Test series against West Indies.
Former skippers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made a return to international cricket in ODI squad. The duo last played on India Test tour of Australia in December-January 2024-25. Both the players announced the retirement from Test cricket after that, having already announced retirement from T20Is following India's T20 World Cup 2024 title win.
Shreyas Iyer has been named new ODI vice-captain under newly appointed skipper Shubman Gill. The race between the new ODI skipper was between Shubman Gill, who is India's new Test captain following Rohit's retirement and Shreyas Iyer, who is leading the India A side against ongoing ODI series against Australia A in India.
Looking at India's pack international calendar after the Australia tour, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from ODIs. while Hardik Pandya misses out due to injury picked up before Asia Cup 2025 final.

Shreyas Iyer has been named Gill's deputy in the ODIs as Indian cricket completes the change of baton. Gill is also expected to take over from SKY most probably after next year's T20 world cup to become India's all-format captain.
Shubman Gill is reported to take over ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma in ODIs. The youngster was also named Test skipper after Rohit's retirement earlier this year. Gill was also named SKY's deputy in the Men's T20 Asia Cup 2025.
If Kuldeep Yadav is rested, it could be Axar and Varun Chakaravarthy in ODIs as two spinning options along with Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi in the mix as well.
India has plethora of options for the opening slot along with Rohit, which includes Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, KL Rahul and Priyansh Arya as well who hit a ton in the recent unofficial ODI vs AUS - A.
India's Test wicketkeeper seems to have fallen down in the pecking order in white-ball cricket. KL Rahul offers flexible option in ODIs with Sanju Samson taking up gloves in the T20Is. It looks hard for Pant to make a comeback in the white-ball cricket as of now but you never know.
The premier all-rounder picked up an injury before the Asia Cup 2025 final and is uncertain for selection on the Australia tour. In his place, India have Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy as two seam-bowling all-rounder as other options.
Both the all-rounders have played T20I cricket with Dube impressing with his skills in the Asia Cup as well. Reddy, on the other hand, has featured in Tests and T20Is so far and is yet to make his debut in the 50-over cricket.
Jasprit Bumrah's workload management has been a hot topic of discussion for quite some time. After featuring in three Tests on England tour, the bowler played Asia Cup 2025 and is part of West Indies Test series as well. Given two World Cups in next two years, Bumrah could be rested from some matches or entire tour of Australia.
His replacement could be Arshdeep Singh in both T20Is and ODIs, along with Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj as other options.
Despite having a deep bench strength, India do not have a like-for-like replacement for left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. There are other spin options in Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, etc but none is a left-arm wrist spinner. So, it'll be interesting to see what approach BCCI take when it comes to Kuldeep.
If India's Test skipper Shubman Gill is rested from ODI and T20I squads for Australia tour, Yahsavsi Jaiswal or Abhishek Sharma can replace him in 50-over leg while Jaiswal can get a opportunity to open in T20Is along with Abhishek in place of Gill.
India have a packed calendar after a surprising break post Anderson-Tendulkar trophy. They recently played Asia Cup 2025 and are playing West Indies currently in a two-Test home series. The Australia tour starts right after WI series and India host South Africa post Australia tour.
Looking at the commitments, India might rest a few of their all format players which include Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav.
Rohit, who hasn't announced any intentions from stepping down from the role, is expected to lead the ODI side Down Under. A new deputy, who may replace him as full time ODI skipper, might be announced in the squad.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, last played on India Test tour of Australia in December-January 2024-25, are expected to make a return to the ODI squad - the only format they play.
