Prosecutor drops all charges against Scottie Scheffler in PGA Championship incident

The prosecutors in the USA state of Kentucky have said that they are dropping the criminal charges against world's no. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler following his arrest at the PGA Championship earlier this month.

Scheffler was facing four criminal charges including felony for a second degree assault on a police officer while trying to enter the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. The incident happened in the wee hours on May 17 - the day of his second round the PGA Championship.

According to the police, Scheffler had not paid heed to an officer's command and dragged him with his car. He was taken into custody in handcuffs. The golfer later called the incident a 'big misunderstanding.'

Scheffler, however, released on bail after his arrest in time to make it for the tee time in the second round. He eventually finished eighth in the tournament.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer.

The decision to drop charges may have been partly due to the information released by police in the matter. The Louisville Metropolitan Police department had held a press conference to inform that police officer, Bryan Gillis, who was involved in the incident, was also suspended.

Gillis was not wearing the body-cam at the time of Scheffler's arrest. The publicly-released footage of the incident also didn't show Scheffler dragging the police officer as mentioned in the initial report.

Police footage, including one taken by a street pole camera that shows Scheffler's vehicle slowly turn into Valhalla before an officer runs towards it and strikes it as it comes to a stop.

The officer continuously reaches into the window of the driver's seat before the door opens and Scheffler emerges. The vehicle did not move once the officer began interacting with it.
