David Warner goes past Sachin Tendulkar, now has most hundreds across formats as opener

Australia batsman David Warner has gone past Sachin Tendulkar to record most ODI hundreds as an opener across formats. The southpaw reached the milestone in second ODI against South Africa on Saturday, September 9 during the ongoing five-match series.

Warner, who made his debut for Australia in 2009, has played all his career as an opener, and now has 46 centuries to his name - 20 in ODIs, 25 in Tests and one in T20Is. Sachin, on the other hand, has 45 centuries to his name as an opener - all in ODIs, out of his 100 international tons. Warner also has second most ODI hundreds for Australia behind Ricky Ponting who tops the list with 29.

Speaking about his numbers, Warner has played in 144 ODI in his career, scoring 6,136 runs at an average of 45 and with a high score of 179. In Tests, Warner is a force to reckon with, having scored 8,487 runs in 199 innings of 109 matches at an average of 44 and with a highest of 335. The opening batsman has also played 99 T20Is, scoring 2,894 runs at an average of 32.88 with a highest of 100.

As for Tendulkar, the legendary batsman has scored all his 100 tons in only ODIs and Tests. After making his debut in 1989, Tendulkar started to open batting in 1994 in ODIs and went on to score 45 of his 49 tons at that position. In Tests, the master blaster has 51 tons.

As for the match, Warner's belligerent ton and then a sublime century by Marnus Labuschagne helped Australia post a mammoth 392/8 in their 50 overs. Apart from two centurions, Travis Head's 36-ball 64 and Josh Inglis's 37-ball 50 also deflated the Protea fast bowlers.

For the home team, Tabrez Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers who took four wickets for 61 runs in his 10 overs. Australia currently lead five-match series 1-0.
