'Stair-like formations' beneath the Baltic Sea? Scientists decode mystery behind 'alien' structure

One of the greatestdeep-seamysteries in the world had kept scientists engaged for more than a decade but now they claim to have most likely solved it.

In 2011, Swedish explorers Peter Lindberg and Denis Asberg were on the search for treasure inside the Baltic Sea when a shocking structure was detected by their sonar radars.

The structure was present 300 feet (90 metres) beneath the waves and it had a circular shape with a diameter of approximately 200 feet (60 metres), as reported by the Discovery Channel.

As per the report, the form had angular lines and to many, it appeared eerily similar to the iconicStar Wars starship the Millennium Falcon.

Scientists also claimed that the structure had “stair-like formations” and 660 feet (200 metres) away from it was another unknown object.

While speaking to Sweden’sTV4 about the unique find, Asberg said, “We were really surprised and puzzled. We were thinking, ‘What is that we have found here?’. This is not a wreck. At that time we thought for sure there was a natural explanation."

“We wanted to look into it some more and decided to keep this totally quiet. We contacted geologists, marine biologists and when they said they had never seen anything like this, of course, more thoughts were triggered. It could be something really awesome that we’ve found," he added.

The weird structure prompted speculations about it being the remains of an ancient civilisation or UFO or hidden Nazi weapon or secretWorld War II bunker.

Lindberg, offering his own theories regarding the structure to NBC in 2012, said, "It has these very strange stair formations, and if it is constructed, it must have been constructed tens of thousands of years ago before the Ice Age."

"If this isAtlantis, that would be quite amazing," he added.

In 2016, the Ocean X team explored the structure, took some samples from the site and made a documentary on it.

After studying the samples, Stockholm University geologist Volker Bruchert said, "What has been generously ignored by the Ocean-X team is that most of the samples they have brought up from the sea bottom are granites and gneisses and sandstones."

After the analysis, he claimed that the object was not at all mysterious.

"I was surprised when I researched the material. I found a great black stone that could be a volcanic rock. My hypothesis is that this object, this structure was formed during the Ice Age many thousands of years ago," he added.

The researchers also agreed that it was created by the process of glacial movements which had occurred during the Ice Age.

Some even suggested that it was made of sandstone or basalt or from hardened lava which was produced from an underwater volcano.
