PM Modi conducts aerial survey of Wayanad, meets victims' families
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (August 10) conducted an aerial survey of disaster-hit areas in the Indian state of Kerala'sWayanad districtwhere landslides claimed hundreds of lives.
Modi boarded an Indian Air Force helicopter and conducted an aerial survey over the landslide-ravaged Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattom hamlets before leaving Kannur Airport to Wayanad around 11:15 am (local time).
The visit was also attended by KeralaChief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan,Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Union Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi.
After the aerial survey, PM Modi would land at the SKMJ Higher Secondary School in Kalpetta. He would thenproceed to certain landslides-hit areas by road.
His visit comes at a time when the Kerala government has sought Rs 2,000 crore ($238,234) in assistance for rehabilitation and relief work in the disaster-stricken region.

At least 226 people have died, with many more still unaccounted for, after landslides hit the region on July 30 in what is seen as one of the biggest natural disasters to have impacted the southern state.
The Indian PMalso visited DrMoopen's Wayanad Medical College at Rippon and interacted with six people -Avanthika, Arun, Shruthi Mohapatra, Jassila, Raseena, and Anil, undergoing treatment at the hospital afterthe landslide.
Avanthika lost her parents and brother in the disaster, while Mohapatra, an Orissa native, lost her husband, and Anil lost his mother and lone child in the catastrophe.
A review meeting was called at the Wayanad collectorate at Kalpetta to assess the gravity of the calamity, according to a report by The Hindu.
The ruling partyand the Opposition haverequested the Central government to declare the July 30 landslidethat flattened Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Attamala localities a national disaster.
Search operations for bodies of missing persons in the Chooralmala-Mundakkai landslides are ongoing. Though no new bodies were retrieved, the search teams found seven pieces from different places. The confirmed death tollstands at 224, as of August 6, 2024.
