The top court set aside the Calcutta High Court order directing the Centre not to withdraw Central Armed Paramilitary Forces companies from Darjeeling and Kalimpong over the Gorkhaland protests
The Supreme Court today (February 21) set aside the Calcutta High Court order directing the Centre not to withdraw remaining the Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) companies in Darjeeling and Kalimpong over the Gorkhaland protests.
The top court permitted the Centre to withdraw the remaining four CAPF companies from the violence-hit areas of West Bengal.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra considered Attorney General KK Venugopal's submission that the deployment of the central armed forces fell under the Central government's administrative domain.
The Supreme Court said the four companies will be deployed till March 8.
The Calcutta High Court order had restrained the Centre from withdrawing CAPF from the state's hill regions on the ground that normalcy had not returned.
