The Supreme Court today (February 21) set aside the Calcutta High Court order directing the Centre not to withdraw remaining the Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) companies in Darjeeling and Kalimpong over the Gorkhaland protests.

The top court permitted the Centre to withdraw the remaining four CAPF companies from the violence-hit areas of West Bengal.&nbsp;

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra considered Attorney General KK Venugopal&#39;s submission that the deployment of the central armed forces fell under the Central government&#39;s administrative domain.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court said the four companies will be deployed till March 8.

The disquiet in Darjeeling hills of West Bengal -- the epicentre of a violent separate statehood protests -- refuses to subside as&nbsp;the indefinite agitation enters its second week. &nbsp;

India&#39;s security personnel were on high alert and the internet remained out of bounds as no incidents of violence were reported on Monday morning.

&quot;The situation is still very tense. Since morning there has been no incident of violence but we are on high alert and prepared for any eventuality,&quot; a senior police official, wishing anonymity, told Press Trust of India.

Sunday was the latest flash point in the riven region demonstrators set ablaze a public library, two panchayat offices and a police vehicle in Kalimpong, roughly 50 kilometres from Darjeeling.&nbsp;

Darjeeling, meanwhile, remained&nbsp;in shutdown mode for the seventh consecutive day on Sunday as thousands of supporters took to the streets to mark their protest against alleged police killing of two GJM supporters.

Gorkha&nbsp;Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Bimal Gurung -- who is spearheading the separatist movement -- also vowed to carry on the agitation till a separate state is carved out of West Bengal.

He also warned of &quot;trouble&quot; if the police interfered in the statehood protests which has been characterised by clashes, arson attacks and political recriminations.&nbsp;

The 51-year-old leader made the statement after baton-wielding police fired tear gas shells at the protesters on Saturday. The police also conducted raids on offices and homes of GJM leaders.

The violence in Darjeeling intensified today after a series of raids near premises of the separatist GJM chief Bimal Gurung, sparking a call by the separatist group for an indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling hills.

Police recovered more than 300 weapons, including arrows and explosives in the raids.&nbsp;A few party activists were also arrested in the raids in Darjeeling&#39;s Singmari and Patlebas areas, police said.

Darjeeling&#39;s top cop Akhilesh Chaturvedi said he had received information that GJM was gathering arms to attack the police, so the security forces conducted raids in several places.

A car belonging to Zee News was attacked after a mob of protesters started advancing towards police who had started withdrawing after the raids.

The Zee News crew and vehicle were stranded in between.

The mob pelted stones and hurled petrol bombs from a height on the crew and towards police.

The Zee News crew had a narrow escape as it abandoned its equipment and ran for cover, while the Zee vehicle, an Innova, was badly damaged by a petrol bomb.&nbsp;

The Morcha meanwhile condemned the incident and the attack on policemen.

GJM leader Binay Tamang earlier denied any wrongdoing and said, &quot;We are tribals, about to hold our traditional archery competition. They showed our traditional equipment as weapons.&quot;

Inspector General Siddhinath Gupta, who confirmed the incident, said action would be taken against the agitators.

The demand by the GJM for a separate Gorkhaland state to be carved out of the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal state is fast turning into a major political crisis for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and is likely to cripple the critical tourist industry during the peak summer season.

Bimal Gurung has asked tourists to avoid Darjeeling, West Bengal&#39;s tea-growing region and also one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.

Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung on Saturday said the party has decided to go on an indefinite strike from Monday demanding a separate state of &#39;Gorkhaland&#39;.

&quot;We will go on strike from Monday. Bengal government takes so much revenue from us but it only encroach our territory. We want our Gorkahland and will not negotiate on this matter. We will not do any violence. We have also written to Home Minister Rajnath Singh apprising him as to how West Bengal suppresses us,&quot; Gurung told ANI.

Meanwhile, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said that an all party meeting has been called on June 13 to discuss the matter.

&quot;Offices of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, Bengal government and Central Government will be closed from Monday. Court will be open. Banks will be open on Monday and Thursday. Earlier in the day, Gurung asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to do or promote &#39;divisive&#39;&nbsp;politics in the state.

&quot;I request Mamta Banerjee that she is a chief minister and she must not do divisive politics. Her dictatorial politics will find a place in the Guinness book soon,&quot; Gurung told ANI.

He assured that the GJM will talk to the Centre as the state government is trying to suppress Gorkhaland for her own political interest.

&quot;We will talk to the Centre and will send a letter to Prime Minister and Home Minister as well regarding all the atrocities. The state government is doing to suppress Gorkhaland for her own political interest,&quot; he said.

Yesterday, a PIL has been filed in the Calcutta High Court against the bandh called by GJM in Darjeeling, declaring it to be &#39;&#39;unconstitutional and illegal&quot;.

The matter will be brought up for hearing next week.However, the Chief Minister branded the incident of the GJM protest as &quot;abhorrent&quot;&nbsp;and appealed to the people of the region to maintain peace.

The GJM supporters are protesting against the alleged imposition of Bengali in the schools of the hills.

The agitation arose from an announcement made by Mamata Banerjee last week that Bengali would be taught compulsorily up to Class 10 in state schools.

After the GJM cadres clashed with the police following their protests against Mamata&#39;s visit to Darjeeling and her decision to make Bengali compulsory in syllabus of schools across the state, the Army was called in to control the situation yesterday.

According to reports, the protest led by the GJM turned violent after protesters resorted to vandalism as they torched police vehicles and attacked policemen.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, Gurung asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to do or promote 'divisive' politics in the state. "I request Mamta Banerjee that she is a chief minister and she must not do divisive politics. Her dictatorial politics will find a place in the Guinness book soon," Gurung told ANI. He assured that the GJM will talk to the Centre as the state government is trying to suppress Gorkhaland for her own political interest. "We will talk to the Centre and will send a letter to Prime Minister and Home Minister as well regarding all the atrocities. The state government is doing to suppress Gorkhaland for her own political interest," he said. Yesterday, a PIL has been filed in the Calcutta High Court against the bandh called by GJM in Darjeeling, declaring it to be ''unconstitutional and illegal". The matter will be brought up for hearing next week.However, the Chief Minister branded the incident of the GJM protest as "abhorrent" and appealed to the people of the region to maintain peace. The GJM supporters are protesting against the alleged imposition of Bengali in the schools of the hills. The agitation arose from an announcement made by Mamata Banerjee last week that Bengali would be taught compulsorily up to Class 10 in state schools. After the GJM cadres clashed with the police following their protests against Mamata's visit to Darjeeling and her decision to make Bengali compulsory in syllabus of schools across the state, the Army was called in to control the situation yesterday. According to reports, the protest led by the GJM turned violent after protesters resorted to vandalism as they torched police vehicles and attacked policemen. (ANI)
