Supreme Court dismisses petition against 'Padmavati', takes serious note of statements by people in high office

The Supreme Court dismissed a petition Tuesday filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma seeking a stay on the movie Padmavati.
While dismissing the petition, the court took serious note of statements made about the movie by persons holding high office.
The court said that was tantamount to pre-judging the movie.
The court added that the statements were violative of the principle of "rule of law"since the Censor Board was yet to certify the movie.
The plea by Sharma, news reports said, had sought direction from the court that the makers of the movie not release it outside India.
Sharma had alleged that grave damage would be done to social harmony if the movie were to be released outside India.
The reports added that Sharma had soughtcriminal prosecution of the movie's makers for misrepresenting facts.
There have been earlier petitions against the movie's release too, all of which have been dismissed by the Supreme Court.
The court has said it cannot interfere in what is the CBFC's work.
Various fringe groups led by the Rajput Karni Sena, and states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have protested against the film's release alleging that it distorts historical facts.

Viacom 18, the movie's makers, had earlier said they have "voluntarily deferred"the movie's release originally scheduled for December 1.
