Congress president Sonia Gandhi said today she will retire from politics once her son Rahul Gandhi takes over the leadership of the party, media reports said.
Last week, Rahul Gandhi was elected unopposed as Congress president. The party said it had received 89 nomination proposals for Rahul's elevation as head of India's grand old party.
Rahul has virtually taken over the reins of the party devising poll strategies in Gujarat and other state assemblies as he galvanises his party to on a resurgent BJP under Narendra Modi.
Sonia Gandhi, 71, has been struggling with her health. In October, the Congress president had to cut short her vacation after suffering from a stomach upset. Sonia was flown out of Shimla in an air ambulance and admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital.
In 2011, she had visited the US for surgery but the Congress refused to provide information about her health, the Congress president has been visiting the US for regular check-ups since then.
Rahul is expected to take over officially as Congress president on December 16.
