Patanjali publishes new, bigger 'unconditional public apology' after Supreme Court rebuke

Patanjali publishes new, bigger 'unconditional public apology' after Supreme Court rebuke

Patanjali apology

Patanjali co-founders yoga guru Swami Ramdev and Balkrishna on Wednesday (April 24) issued an apology in newspapers. The fresh apology comes a day after the Indian Supreme Court's scrutiny during the Ayurvedic company's misleading advertisement-related contempt case.

Multiple apologies

As per the Business Standard, Wednesday's apology appears nearly double in size from Patanjali's earlier apology, which, it says, was limited to just a notch above 70 words. It is also more visible.

"In wake of ongoing matter before the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, we in our individual capacity as well as on behalf of the Company, unconditionally apologise for the non-compliance or disobedience of directions/orders of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India," reads Patanjali's new "unconditional public apology".

"We unconditionally extend the apology for holding meeting/press conference dated 22.11.2023. We earnestly apologise for the mistake made in publishing our advertisements, and it is our whole- hearted commitment that such errors will not be repeated."

"We undertake to abide by directions and instructions of the Hon'ble Court with due care and utmost sincerity. We undertake to uphold the majesty of the court and comply with applicable laws and directions of the Hon'ble Court of law/relevant authorities," it adds.

Swami Ramdev and Balkrishna have also submitted an "unconditional and unqualified apology" to the Supreme Court regarding its advertisements that made tall and exaggerated claims about the healing properties of the company's products.

Supreme Court's rebuke

This comes after, on Tuesday (Apr 22), the top court questioned the size and visibility of Patanjali's apology concerning its misleading advertisements.

The apex court reprimanding Ramdev's Patanjali had asked, "Is the apology the same size as your advertisements?"

Contending the rebuke, appearing for the company, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi had told the court that the apologies in 67 newspapers cost Patanjali 'tens of lakhs'.

However, Justice Hima Kohli, who along with Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah is presiding over the case, asked the company, "Does it cost the same tens of lakhs of rupees for the full-page advertisements you published?"

"Cut the actual newspaper clippings and keep them handy. For you to photocopy by enlarging, it may not impress us. We want to see the actual size of the ad. When you issue an apology, it does not mean that we have to see it by a microscope," added the Supreme Court Justice.
