A Parsi woman, who was barred from entering fire temples after marrying outside the community, was today granted the right to enter a Parsi temple in Gujarat after a landmark decision by the Supreme Court.
The woman, Goolrukh Gupta, had approached the Supreme Court challenging a 2012 Gujarat High Court order which upheld the Special Marriage Act that the woman ceased to be a Parsi and her religion automatically changed to that of her husband.
The woman, however, continued to practice as a Parsi and challenged the High Court verdict on the grounds that the Special Marriage Act does not require either husband or wife to renounce their religion.
The five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra was hearing the case and asked the Parsi community to take a more progressive stance on the issue.
The woman was granted the right to enter the Parsi temple by the Valsad Parsi community.
