Paramilitary forces deployed amid protests over death of IAS aspirants; 5 including basement owner arrested

Security on Monday (Jul29) was beefed up in the Indian capital New Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar area as civil service aspirants protested the death of three students. The UPSC aspirants were killed on Saturday (Jul28) after heavy rains flooded their institute, Rau's IAS Study Circle's basement.

As per reports, the aspirants have gathered outside Rau's IAS Study Circle demanding justice for the students killed because of the institute's negligence of safety codes.

Paramilitary forces deployed

As per news agency PTI reports, a senior police officer said,"We have deployed paramilitary forces and police in the area to maintain law and order."

On Sunday too, a massive protest was held by students who squatted and blocked both the carriageways of the Pusa Road near the Karol Bagh Metro Station.

"We request all to maintain law and order. The Pusa Road is an important road with many hospitals in the vicinity. We have barricaded the area and deployed additional force to maintain peace. We will ensure that no one is disturbed due to the protest," said the police officer.

Five arrested

Delhi police, on Monday, said that it has arrested five people, including the owner of the basement where the three IAS aspirants died. With this, the total number of people arrested has gone up to seven.

"Five more persons have been arrested in connection with the flooding case in Rajinder Nagar. This includes the owner of the basement and an individual who drove a vehicle which appears to have damaged the gate of the building (leading to water gushing in the basement)," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsha Vardhan.

The police reported that the car drove through the rainwater, causing an increase in water flow and knocking down the basement door.
