Witnesses to the stampede said the melee had been caused either by a "short circuit and an explosion" or by rumours that part of the bridge was collapsing.
The Western Railways howeverblamed the stampede on "unprecedented" rains. It said people had sought shelter from the rains on the FOB, which led to overcrowding and the resultant stampede.
