India: TISS Mumbai student found dead at home after party in Vashi, investigation underway

In India's Mumbai, a student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was found dead in his rented accommodation, said the police on Sunday (August 25).

Information about the deceased student

The deceased TISS student has been identified as Anurag Jaiswal, a first-year student of the Human Resource study programmeat the institution.

As per an NDTV report citing sources, Jaiswal on Friday night (August 23) went to a party in Vashi with his friends. The party had around 150 students at the gathering and alcohol was consumed at the party.

While earlier, the police, as per reports, had indicated that ragging may have played a part in the student's death,they have now ruled it out.

The police, upon questioning the deceased's roommates, found out that Jaiswal had gotten inebriated and was unwell upon returning from the party in Vashi.

When he did not wake up in the morning, he was rushed to a hospital in the Chembur area of the city, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Family informed of the death

Anurag Jaiswal's family in Lucknow has been informed of his death. The family has reportedly requested the authorities to nothold the postmortem until their arrival in Mumbai.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, TISS expressed its sorrow about Jaiswal's death.

"It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing away of Anurag Jaiswal, first-year student of HRM&LR of TISS Mumbai. We are with Anurag’s family at this heartbreaking time and our thoughts and prayers will always be with the Anurag’s family," said the institute.

The police are questioning Jaiswal's friends and a case of accidental death has been registered, while the matter is under investigation.
