India successfully test-fired the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from the Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet for the first time today.
The test-flight will significantly increase the IAF's air combat operations capability, the defence ministry said.
The missile,which weighs 2.5 tonnes and is the heaviest weapon to be deployed on India's Su-30 aircraft, hit a sea-based target in the Bay of Bengal from the fighter jet.
"The successful maiden test firing of Brahmos Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) from Su-30MKI will significantly bolster the IAF's air combat operations capability from stand-off ranges," the defence ministry said.

The land-launched and ship-launched versions of the missile are already in service. The submarine-launched version is also currently in the testing phase.
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India had created a world record and completed the supersonic cruise missile triad by successfully testing BrahMos Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) from the Indian Air Force Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft.
"Congratulate Team Brahmos and DRDO India for this historic achievement," the defence minister said.
The missile, which travels three faster than the speed of sound, was developed by India and Russia.
The Indian Army became the first land force in the world to deploy the Brahmos in 2007. It has raised several regiments of this formidable weapon.
