India asks UK to not give Vijay Mallya asylum

India has requested the UK governmentto not consider fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya's request.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, "We have requested the UK side to not consider his asylum if requested by him" because there appears to be "no ground for his persecutionin India."

New Delhi has been in touch with the UKfor his "early" extradition.

Vijay Mallya's leave to appeal against extradition in the UK Supreme Court was rejected few weeks ago leaving no further legal remedy in the country. It is now up to the UK home secretary Priti Patel to give a final go-ahead by signing on the extradition papers.

Mallya had committed a fraud of Rs 9,000 crore on a consortium of Indian banks.

He was denied permission to appeal to the UK Supreme Court against an extradition order to India.

Vijay Mallya denies the charges against him and is currently on bail.
